Is Alex really... (SPOILER)

...dead?

His project was about an algorithm to facilitate "the end of all lies", and he was supposedly one of the smartest people in the world, so could he really not pass a lie detector test that was analyzing his eye behavior? I know it was under extraordinary circumstances but still...

When we later see the video of his conversation with Frances, we see that his pupil diameter did not change during the first three questions, and they only changed when he said he loved her too. So, what if the agents knew he was telling the truth, therefore did not have a reason to kill him, but they made her think that they did because they didn't want her trying to contact him.

The body had been in the trunk for days and had decayed some before it was found, so it could have been someone else. Danny barely looked at it because of the shock he was in and the smell.

Any thoughts?

The creator/writer of the show has said that Alex was indeed the body in the box...

However, I agree with you that it makes no sense especially if you consider some of the elements in previous episodes and especially why they keep "torturing" Danny ( the escort meeting makes no sense as well as the charges being suddenly dropped if Alex is indeed dead ).

I also must applaud you for realizing that the pupil diameter did not change! I would then add that Alex research was also based on speech patterns: therefore, it would work IF Alex had published a lot which I found hard to believe .

Mind showing me the interview? Can't seem to find it.
The script itself exerted such great lengths to keep it open-ended from beginning to end, it's hard for me to believe that a writer would casually screw his own effort by clarifying a mystery he tried so hard to maintain in the first place.

I am so sorry it took me so much time but I have been too busy lately.

Here is the part I was mentioning:

Why have people responded to London Spy on such an emotional level?

We watch things to connect with people. Lots of people out there are struggling to find their way. Danny and Alex were lost in very different ways, then found each other. A lot of people tweeted me, really sincerely pleading for Alex to be alive. There wasn’t much I could do about that, but I was pleased because it meant the relationship worked.

So you never intended Alex’s fate to be ambiguous?

When I wrote it, it didn’t cross my mind that he’d be alive. That would have felt like such a trick.

And here is the link to the interview in the Guardian: http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2015/dec/17/tom-rob-smith-london-spy-i-was-surprised-that-sex-scene-shocked-anyone

However, I do agree with you that it makes almost no sense whatsoever. Very odd.

They also told us that Jon Snow was dead.

They lie. The whole damn lot of them!

PS... I'm in agreement that him living makes way more sense than killing him off. Intelligence agencies likely don't kill the super intelligent very easily, plus the whole ordeal in the final episode to have him in the trunk and bring his 'mother' in seemed highly highly staged, beyond just staging the death of Alex for the world.
