An enjoyable homage except...

... Tom Courtenay. Just couldn't stand him as Jones. Everyone else was pretty close to the characters they were portraying but Courtenay was just his usual self.

Jones is such an iconic character and the humour came from Clive Dunn doing a 'Harbottle' and playing it 30 years older than he actually was. It could have been an opportunity for a younger actor to do the same. He just mumbled his lines and didn't suit at all in my opinion.

Otherwise, nice tribute to the original.

I agree Courtnay was the weak link in the cast, but I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the film, and enjoyed it very much.

I think that it was always going to be a difficult job to replace Clive Dunn as his character. I like the way that is revealed that he had never killed anyone in his life despite all his stories of being in Sudan.

After watching the recent bbc docu-drama on dads army I have to say most of the cast should've been replaced by those from the docu-drama.
Jones as a character was under-utilised but then the plot was so weak there isn't much room for many characters when the film is based around several men hitting on one woman.

Despite enjoying it a lot, got to agree with you, Courtenay as Jones just didn't work for me. It was always going to be hard but I don't think he even came close to Clive Dunn's Jones or, well.. anyone I was interested in. Ended up ignoring his character and enjoying the rest. Fun film though.
