Really Loved this Franchise

I really loved this series of movies Lifetime created from the V.C. Andrews book series. They may not have been the most intellectual films ever made, but I thought they were a lot of fun to watch. All four of them really drew me into the story lines and made me truly care about the characters. I think everybody involved with the franchise did a great job.

I feel the same way. Felt like when I read my books! Great job Lifetime and actors!

Ps. OT: I tar that they're doing Lizzie Borden Chronicles! Uff!

I have to say that as a lifelong diehard fan of the Dollanganger saga, I haven't been overly impressed by the film franchise...entertained, yes. Impressed, not much. Extra disappointed that there won't be a Garden of Shadows. But I do have to say (as a fan) that I have loved the amount of people around me (who have seen the films) that say they will now read the books! So yay, if this franchise can introduce a new generation of readers to V.C. Andrews...then that's fine with me! 😊

I'm just surprised that Lifetime tackled such a big project, making the Dollanganger series into four movies. When put together, this really is a fun series to watch. Of course I was hoping for some talented director to make this into great films, but I'm grateful for this..

Me too! I thought they were awesome. Turned out much better than I thought they would be. I loved Heather Graham's portrayal of Corrine most of all. And James Marslow as Bart in the last movie was really good too. I liked the changes they made to the last movie as well regarding Cindy and Bart. In my head when I was reading the last book I was hoping they would realize they reason they hated each other was partly because they were afraid of how much they wanted each other. I know some fans don't like it because they want everything 100% according to the books, but I'm glad the writers went there. I always liked to imagine they eventually got together, maybe after Cathy died.

I enjoyed it too; after the weak, unfaithful 1987 movie I always wished they would redo it and make movies of the other novels as well, and they finally did. I've loved this series since I was a preteen and I'm now 36, so I've waited for a while, lol.

I really love Lifetime's adaptions of the series too, the first movie far exceeded the nonsense trainwreck that was the 1987 movie, and I've enjoyed every subsequent sequel in the movie series. Of course the movies still had some flaws, my main problem with these movies was that some aspects were too rushed. But overall, I think the movies were really good and I thoroughly enjoyed them.

The 1987 movie would have been better if the studio hadn't butchered it. There was nudity, incest scenes between Cathy and Chris, as well as violence that the studio cut out in order to ensure a PG-13 rating, despite the fact that it was shot as an R-Rated film. It's a shame because it had a great atmosphere and musical score (something that the Lifetime series of movies distinctly lacks).

Having said, that, I love the books and enjoy seeing the efforts to put them onto film.

Eh... I like that they did the movies but I'm not super impressed. If they make a miniseries out of each Dollanganger book, I would be impressed then!

It is nice to see Lifetime breathe life and recognition for this famous franchise, though. I've always thought V.C. Andrews was underrated. Her books were far ahead of their time in many ways.

I have enjoyed the movies as well. I never read the books. What is garden of shadows about?

reply

It's about how the dysfunction in the family got started. The story portrays the life of Malcolm Foxworth, how he met and treated the grandmother, and how Corrine ended up marrying her half uncle...which the readers find out later that they are much closer then they are led to believe with the other books.

You posted this last year. I am sure by now you have either read or found out about what really went down. It's a very good read. I'll just say the grandmother is not a monster like most readers think that she is.

I loved it as well. I enjoyed the characters and the plots that followed them. I expect it will be on DVD soon as a package.
