On Netflix. A friend from IMDb said it was worth watching, so I started it. Not all the way through the second season yet, but have had a few actual laugh-out-loud moments so far.
Anyone else here a fan, or have any comments to make?
I started it a little bit ago, but never finished the first season. It's nice and charming, but for some reason kind of irritated me too haha...I think Rebecca's friends behavior is a bit messed up. All she seems to do is enable Rebecca's "crazy" behaviors and desires when they're not really that healthy to begin with.
Now, I understand that maybe if I just kept going they'd deal with and I'd eat my words, but the way Rebecca is treated is sort of bizarre to me. Rachel Bloom is great and the musical numbers are delightful, but I kind of couldn't get over that annoyance and so just sort of stopped.
But I'm open to getting back into it at some point because it is a fun and well made show.
I made a mistake in my OP. Finished the first season, but not the second.
Rebecca does take responsibility for her lies and other shortcomings in S2 (so far, anyway). That becomes an issue and is dealt with (so far!).
I agree it's a fun and well-made show. I had no idea what to expect when I first started watching, all I knew was I valued my friend's opinion, even if we didn't always like the same shows. I always knew anything he'd recommend would at least be intelligent.
Ah, okay, I figured they'd dealt with it at some point. I like the shows cheeky honesty and realness about things, but the fact that everyone seem to only exacerbate or enable her quasi-delusion really rubbed me the wrong way.
I've kept it on my queue for now, so I do plan on getting back into it eventually.
I feel the same way! I found the show on Netflix last summer and ended up, to my surprise, falling completely in love. I think the songs were the clincher for me. I love the humor in them, as well as they are actually very good. I loved season 2 as well, and can hardly wait for the next season! For me, I looked most forward to the new songs each week. I am an avid film lover, but i have never loved a tv show like i do this one!!!!
shareHeh, it's something of an oddball show, which by reading the summary one wouldn't necessarily know if you'd like it, or not. But like you, I ended up by liking it very much. I love the quirky, and realistic, humor, and feel the same way about S1 as I did about S2, and I too look forward to S3!
shareI was going to start a new thread, but remembered I had already commented in this one and it's relevant so...
I got back into it and am nearing the end of S1 and I can't say my initial irritations have changed all that much. I do like Rebecca starting to own her actions, but Paula is still just a really awful friend. She's completely dependent on Rebecca's life, looms over everything she does, meddles where she shouldn't and gets mad when Rebecca doesn't include her in every little thing.
Of course friends should care and look out for each other....but Paula goes beyond that to the point of obsessiveness and it's just really creepy, annoying, and unhealthy. If someone were like that to me I wouldn't think of them as a friend so much as a stalker, to be honest. Since you're further into the show than I am, does she start coming around on this too, like Rebecca or what? Cause honestly, it's enough to make me stop watching again.
I think Paula gets less crazy in season 2.

shareYeah, I think they intentionally wrote her over the top as an extreme version of the typical romcom sidekick who goes way out of control trying to live vicariously through her best friend to fill her own empty life. Maybe they realize that joke would get old over the course of an entire series so they flesh her out into a more normal person in season 2.
shareI didn't mind seeing it as the start of her arc, but I think they let it go on too long. But it's been feeling like she's gotten worse instead of beginning to have that arc. That could be because the first season is much longer than most these days (well, at least outside of a few network channels that is) so they had more time they were working with....or it's just my own tv sensibilities that have been shaped by being used to shorter seasons.
Who knows, but I was expecting her to not be as bad by now. I look forward to seeing her be more fleshed out.
I think they kind of didn't expect the show to catch on and keep getting renewed. The whole show has almost an improv feel, where major characters will change dramatically and go into totally different directions. It's both the charm and the Achilles heel of the show... that they will try almost anything and go almost anywhere depending on what I assume are Rachel's whims. It's a brave show, and often amazing... but it does seem to lack continuity and a coherent long term vision.
shareInteresting cause I was listening to an interview with Rachel Bloom where she said they had it all planned out from start to finish and it's to end after S4. So, that kind of contradicts that thought....which I don't know what that says about the show, haha.
It certainly does keep it fun and fresh, but I can see how it could also make it sort of frustrating story-wise. Perhaps they just care more about character, music, and creativity than actual narrative, who knows.
I have finished S2 and I do think the show improved. There are still parts of it that bother me, like everyone by now knows Rebecca has mental health issues and yet....they still enable her? Like Paula getting in on her intent of revenge just makes me shake my head. I like Paula and think she got a better story line this time around, but that still is just so bad. Her best friend almost just jumped off a freakin cliff and that's how she responds?! Not, "maybe we should get you some help, " or, "maybe we should talk this all out first?" I don't know, I still don't get that.
But that, would you call it a twist? With Robert and her having burned down his house and already been institutionalized before was very well done and I think certainly did (as the theme song used to say) add some nuance to the show and her character. I was surprised, despite the issues they've skirted around before, that the show went that dark. It's way better than most shows on network these days, and I look forward to checking out S3!
Lol... who other than maybe Josh or Greg doesn't have mental issues on that show? All of her friends are batshit crazy... Darryl, Paula... her mother is nuts. I don't think it's enabling when you are in no better position to help.
Who is Robert? ... sorry but I forgot that character.
I'm glad you liked it better... hope it catches on next season... although it's hard to imagine it would at this point.
You're right, I was just thinking, "ya know, Paula's not that much healthier than she is mentally," so it's more like codependency than enabling. They, especially, seem to feed off one another's neuroses and issues. It's kinda sad at times really, but it was neat to see them take her in a different direction just when you think she's finally gonna have an epiphany and try to change herself for the better....nope!
Robert is her married professor that she had an affair with. I'm guessing, considering her age at the time, that maybe that was her first really serious relationship....as an adult anyways.
And by catch on, you mean with me or the general public? Cause I think it's caught on with the latter, it's buzzed about a lot! Didn't Bloom even get an award for it? That's practically unheard of for a CW show, so I'd say it's going gangbusters! Hell, the only reason I'd know about it since I tend to stay away from the CW is from word of mouth.
