Has it lived up to your expectations so far?

Having not watched it yet, but a huge fan of the original series, I was wondering just what people think at this point.

So far it has been really up and down for me. There are some amazing things happening. I gotta say though, this whole time i've kinda been waiting to be "brought home" to twin peaks and i haven't got there yet. I think s3 is missing the heart and soul of the original series. There is still time though. There was one really cool music performance in the first couple of episodes and there have been some cute winks for the old fans. I'd love to hear what you think after you view it. What are you waiting for?!

I'm at episode 8 and so far it's a huge let down. The show is all over the place, the plot is not moving forward and episode 8 was a joke I think, I was watched it in fast-forward. It was basically 45 minutes of a nuclear explosion.
It has not much to do with the original series.

So far, not happy. In a footrace between the narrative progress of this thing and a glacier, put your money on the glacier.

My expectations were that they were going to indulge in non stop nostalgia for the people who watched TP on Netflix in 2012 and have been "waiting so long for season 3," and for the people who were around to watch the original airing but never really paid attention -- who just remember a midget dancing in a red room and "that show with who killed laurapalmer," only later being told it was an "important" show and then feeling proud that they were alive at the same time of the show.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that season 3 sticks to the same agenda of doing experimental and unexplained stuff on tv that we who actually watched and enjoyed the original airing got from it. Remember, at the original airing, all sorts of squares were talking about "that gay show, that pretentious nonsense... how is it on the air?" Well, expectations for tv have shifted since then. The avant-garde of then is the garde of now, so naturally today's avant-garde will look different.

I love it. Granted my expectations were in check after being disappointed by the X-Files reboot, but while Carter phoned that one in Lynch and company have gone all out here. It's different in some ways from the first two seasons (e.g. more long shots for both artistic reasons and because they're no network commercials to worry about, which is great for those of us sick of the needlessly fast edit cuts plaguing most entertainment, and more locations because he's telling a bigger story), but it's still Twin Peaks at its essence. I think Lynch is pushing tv in some fresh and perhaps in some cases badly needed directions. There's nothing else like this on.

Like most here I want certain things to happen and certain people to finally appear, but even when quibbling about stuff I look forward to watching the next episode each week more than I have any series since....the original Twin Peaks. There's far more to think on, puzzle over, and wonder about than with other shows. It has a great blend of compelling characters, mystery, humor, action, and dramatic suspense. If you're a Twin Peaks fan then you must watch this show.

I am a Twin Peaks fan, and I miss Josie deeply, and rember that she won a Best Actress Oscar for The Lady Emperor! To keep this mercifully brief, there is very little Twin Peaks (the geographical location) in the dreck we are being fed, so how is this even a continuation, let alone an updated improvement? Not trying to be hostile, I'm just trying to understand your reasoning. It's like tuning into a show titled Supernan and finding that the protagonist is Batman. However, ITA about the narrative benefits of not having commercials and the MUSIC SURGE and the SHOCKING PAUSE as the Proletariat run to the kitchen/bathroom.

reply

Well it's certainly not "dreck", and it's a continuation of the story begun in the "Twin Peaks" series, so I'm not sure what else they're supposed to call it. Dale Cooper is the main character just as he was in the original. It's about his return from the Black Lodge and the scheming of his evil doppelganger who was introduced in Season 2. And there has been a lot of the town shown. The amount has been increasing so clearly they're building up to a climax that will occur there. The various, seemingly disparate strands laid out around the country are being weaved together. We've been following Gordon Cole, Albert, and the mysterious "Diane" around. While not technically from Twin Peaks they were important in the original show. We've even seen a lot of Laura considering she was killed before Season 1 even started. I'd like to get Cooper interacting with TP characters as fast as possible, but I wasn't looking for some soap opera set in Twin Peaks that featured a lot of random plots just so they could say it's in the town of Twin Peaks. I want the story to unfold with a satisfying conclusion.

I find it slow and boring, hernce, dreck. It may not be to you. If (apparently) so, good for you. Agent Cooper, the protagonist in MY "Twin Peaks," has yet to appear in this season. I, personally, think that Lynch is creatively bankrupt and is fucking with the cable network. I could obviously be wrong. If this is making you happy, live long, and prosper. For me, it is a waste of time and utterly bereft of the town of Twin Peaks . . . and Josie.

reply

Ha Ha well poor Josie's prospects for future inclusion dimmed when she died and her spirit ended up trapped in a drawer knob in Season 2. Though I guess death didn't stop Laura and even Leland from making appearances. It is weird that Joan Chen and Heather Graham are two of the women who have aged the best looks wise and have become the most famous since then but neither was apparently cast for some reason. It's not that I completely disagree with your criticisms, it's that so far I don't weigh them as heavily as you do against what I see as the good things about the show. I will say that the series has to end the right way for me to walk away feeling great about it. Right now I'm enjoying the ride and am willing to wait for the full picture to be revealed.

Loving it. Episode 8 especially is one of the greatest things I've ever seen on television.

reply

It is so different, but the scenes run from very funny to really violent. There are 3 new characters that are worse than anything we ever saw in the original. For the most part I love it, even though it frustrates me at times.

reply

I have to admit I've been pretty bored these last two episodes.

I have a funny feeling that LOVE will save the day in good old Twin Peaks, and will be the cause for Cooper waking up from his sleepwalking (which is what I think he's doing) and will prevent Evil Bob to spread from his evil plans, whatever they ultimately are.

As a new David Lynch project I love it. The story is surprisingly easy to follow if you watched the series and movies in total and pay attention, and I'm impressed at how they pieced this large story together with so many players on the board. It's got the right balance so that there's a tangible story that you can follow, and in-between there's still all the quirky surreal sounds and imagery that remind you that it is David Lynch without being too confusing.

On the other hand, as a Twin Peaks series return, I'm kinda confused on what Lynch and Frost's intentions are. I get that these kind of reunions are cheesy and predictable and I love that they tried something inventive rather than play it safe. Twin Peaks has been remade countless times already in other shows like Lost, Wayward Pines and Bates Motel that its almost redundant to go for the same style of show.

The focus on the new characters outside of Twin Peaks is the biggest problem. If they called the show "Mysteries of the Black Lodge" then I would be okay with it because it would distance itself from the expectations that calling itself "Twin Peaks" carries. But the show is called Twin Peaks, so stay in Twin Peaks or call it something else.

With 8 episodes left, I'm interested to see the whole story unfold so we can properly dissect what exactly the point of all this was.

What's the through line in this one?
