True diversity on TV at last

Prime time show where the only regular white male is a secondary character. Police captain: female. Lead detectives: Black and Chinese. Supporting characters: kick ass Latina and black. And the black characters interact with each other like they do, not like white people think they should. The only people I've personally heard say 'racist' are White folks that are confused about what diversity means. I hope the show gets renewed so we can see where these relationships go and maybe drive other prime time network shows to diversify.

Yeah...that's what tv shows need

reply

Yeah, 'cause "Latina" women can't be white or black.. or mixed. Great topic, OP.

reply

Are you serious?

Other than Rush Hour there are no other shows with Black & Hispanics? Seriously?

What about: The Flash, Supergirl, iZombie, Minority Report, Sleepy Hollow, Turn Washington Spies, The Blacklist, Blindspot, Survivor, NCIS LA, Criminal Minds, Person of Interest, Code Black, Motive, Gotham, Criminal Minds Beyond Borders, NCIS New Orleans, and ect. . .

Diversity: the state of having people who are different races or who have different cultures in a group or organization.

With just a few examples of shows that I've given, we already have the Diversity you are looking for.

reply

Exactly! These SJWs act like minority actors haven't been around before. Never mind we've had successful actors like Denzel Washington or Will Smith

reply

That's 2 that managed to find great success from television into film.

But...minority doesn't always equal black...

George Lopez and Jackie Chan also found success in their ways but they're not black. I like how these people act like diversity has never existed before Rush Hour

reply

Thanks for the reply and list of shows... I guess the point I was attempting to make was that the characters in Rush Hour in the 'power' positions are from what I see as typically under- represented groups. Nobody's boss is a white guy... in fact, where a white guy is in an episode, he's usually a slime-ball. The show is fun where you can just not think too hard, no deep sub-plot threads that cross episodes that you need to keep track of.. just jump in anywhere and hear a few corny jokes. A lot of those shows you listed are really good, but I feel like if I get too far behind, I'll never catch up.

Lol, I don't think you could have given worse examples. In fact all of your examples just further prove the OP's point.

Every single one of those shows have exactly what the OP was talking about, WHITE Leads... Its very rare to see on television shows a reversal of a POC lead with the support being white. That is what the OP was praising Rush Hour for. And yes while the show wasn't the best it would be nice to see more shows with a DIVERSE cast that represents what the real world looks like today.

Do you actually believe that the examples you posted are actually diverse? The same old formula of an all white cast with one and sometimes MAYBE two POC tokens thrown in to fool the masses that they have a "diverse" cast. C'mon man really?

NCIS: Los Angeles is the perfect example of tokenism. All white cast with a black person thrown in. You call this diverse? Have you ever been to LA? If you think this is how LA actually looks like you are just lying to yourself, because its not even close.

Person of Interest? Really? This is your example of a diverse cast? What, because they had one black person? (That was eventually killed off btw) This show takes place in New York City ffs, One of the most diverse places on this earth. And you think the all white cast is an actual accurate representation?

I LOVE the show Gotham, but even this is a bad example. Another inner-city show that takes place in an urban setting with, yep you guessed it, a bunch of white people...

If these shows are what people consider to be diverse and good representation of the real world then these studios are much smarter than I thought. It really only does take a few minorities sprinkled sparsely here and there to fool people into thinking how "diverse" Television is...

Only in America does skin color matter so much and it doesn't matter who goes on about it: black, white, hispanic, they're all crybabies about it. "There is too much! There is too little! Whaaaa whaaaaa whaaaaa!"

Grow up America. Your petty squabbles are only one thing: ridiculous.

The show itself was utterly terrible.

Rush Hour (the movie) was funny because of the two different cultures clashing and Jackie Chan's genius in making the most ludicrous fight scenes.

In comparison, the only thing this show had was the "diversity". It was not funny, the jokes were worn out with beards longer than the Mississippi river, the fight scenes were absolutely mediocre run of the mill garbage you see on TV and your "kickass latina" was only in as optical enhancement and did absolutely nothing. Let's be honest, Garcia is hot, but the way they dumped her in this series smells of sexism, due to her character doing only one thing: look pretty.

Good riddance.

Hispanic is a skin colour now?

Having open opportunities and chances for everyone to get represented in media is important, but you still have to make a quality product. Diversity isn't the most important thing in creating a story, creating a good story is. Then create or leave open opportunities around that.

Nothing in what you said actually says whether the fight scenes, comedy, or storylines were well made, just that you had several check marks crossed off.

If anything, this horrible show probably hurt the idea of diversity on television as the network heads are going to look at it's failure and draw the wrong conclusion, not realizing that nobody wants half-baked rip offs of already perfect entertainment (I'm looking at you Ghostbusters remake), and instead blaming the failure on the race of the leads and cast.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I hear what you are saying. Good points. I just thought of the show as silly fun that clearly didn't take itself too seriously. Taking into account your comments, I see there are aspects of the MAKING of the show that probably could have used more attention.

reply

Who the hell cares? The writing is incredibly weak, the two leads substandard actors at best (Page Kennedy and Malick outshine them in every scene they share), the fight scenes are tame and unimaginatively choreographed and the dialogue is stale and hacky.

Keeping this show when there are so many great shows fighting for space on the media landscape would be ludicrous. And why? Because of a "diverse" cast? Gimme a break. Any show can be cast with diversity but good writing and good actors come first. And when did "diversity" start meaning something was good? Have you seen a Tyler Perry sitcom? Not quality. Make sure something is good first and ignore the whiners like "Brentf."
