I think [spoilers]

Walter is right, it is Jenny whose negative energy is affecting her environment. She doesn't want the baby and she wants to return to Chicago, her mother and Luke are standing in the way.
When Walter explains his theory to her at his house, she again expresses her strong intent on returning to Chicago, at the same time Luke witnesses the forces in the house which then leads to his death, this is Jenny's doing.
In the final moments of the movie when Jenny is out front of her house and the baby is crying, she seems annoyed. I think once she returns to Chicago, something will happen to the baby.

So she is perhaps displaying a form of telekinesis? Her "hate" was Walter aptly put it is causing the things around her to happen? I can see that. But then the one who ought to have also gone out a window or something similar was her mother. She hated her more than anyone! The breakfast scene was a horrid thing to watch... the husband and mother-in-law conspiring against her! Or at least that is how she would see it. And Luke never really intending to ever go back to Chicago; he pretty much says it in that scene meaning he's been misleading\lying to her from the beginning. Would not surprise me if he and the mother-in-law had been talking about the move, his job, and it all behind Jenny's back long before the move.

I wish we learned more about her life in Chicago; what was so great about it and how she could just go back to it. Was there a job with an open door to her that paid her, I am sure, expensive rent? All her great friends there? We get a sense of the latter during the visit scenes but no doubt that friend now thinks Jenny is bats**t and probably won't be as tight anymore.

I liked it but found it annoying as so many of these films do that no one believed her. Not until the last five minutes of his life his her husband understand it was not all in his wife's head.

I hope mommy dearest has a similar revelation!

I mean, the whole thing was a mess. Were things really moving around on their own? Several times we see Jenny asking if others can hear the sounds she hears, and they don't seem to. If it's her own energy, why would it throw her down the stairs? Why did they show up in that town in the first place, I mean were they evicted in Chicago? Her husband supposedly had a temporary job that he decided to keep long term for a few months while they stayed in the house (to flip it??). Ugh. I hated every single character, Jenny was shrill, her husband was a controlling dbag, her mom was a harpy, her friend didn't want to help once Jenny actually had a problem. And did Jenny have a history of mental health problems? They alluded to something going wrong during a pregnancy (the same one? a previous one?), but then it seemed like her husband was just a typical controlling a-hole pressuring her to have kids.

Ugh. Hated it.

They're coming to get you, Barbara!

She came from that town which is why they went there, and also it was indicated the mother had a hand in helping them get the house. It was a quick line or two after mom showed up that first day unannounced. Or Luke mentioned it.

She had tried to perform an abortion on herself in Chicago. Had the husband not arrived when he did, she'd have probably been successful but seriously damaged herself (coat hanger?? does not say). So hence the history of mental illness. Luke seemed to think getting her out Chicago and back to her home town would do her good.

That is what he said, anyway. But seeing him and the mother-in-law later and how they interacted; it seemed he wanted to go there for the job and had no intention of making it a temp position. So that "for her good" was a BS smoke screen as perhaps he was not cutting it in Chicago and she was (remember mom saying "at least here he's using his degree"?)

Walter's assessment was I Think 100% spot on. Her angry negative energy about being there, having the kid, having to deal with mommie dearest in person, all clashed with the energy in the home; creating her poltergeist. His final words to her, "Why don't you leave? What is keeping you here?" was answered by the inter-cut scenes of Luke being thrown (he was lying too far from the house to simply have jumped) out the baby room window. Now she had no reason to stay, and as someone else said here, she also did not want the baby so perhaps something will happen to the child as well.

Wow an awful lot of type for a relatively bad movie! Guess it wasn't so much bad as the characters were not likable. I wanted to like Jenny, but ultimately could not. From whining to amateur abortionist to potentially murdering or causing the death of the now newborn... I still have to wonder what awaits her and is so great about Chicago!

I did feel bad for Jenny. I really hated the husband. He was a complete jerk. At one point, I was like, "Even if it's in her head, she obviously has problems, a-hole! Maybe think about her sanity for once." I was happy to see him go out the window. I thought she'd get rid of the mother and the baby too at the end, so she could go back to Chicago.

I did wonder why Jenny was not on some kind of BC.

This is what confuses me, the mother and Luke conspiring against her, was that real? Was the mother really as controlling as we first see?
When Jenny turns up at her mother's house late at night, her mother is a completely different person. She showers Jenny with attention, brushes her hair and reminisces with Jenny about her childhood beauty pageants. Was the mother relieved that she had control over Jenny again? I couldn't understand that part.
I was annoyed too that no one believed her. People seemed wary of her though, like her neighbor. Walter didn't like Jenny either after her outburst, and wouldn't answer her calls, so I think that Jenny's negativity was so pronounced she repelled people, lol.

Just few questions.

1) If it is from Jennys energy than how come her little nephew could see an entity?

2) How come there was negative energy in the house that killed her husband when Jenny was not in the house at the time?

3) Why the focus of the house in the last scene if the house was not at fault? There must be some negative energy from the house too. It cant be all from Jenny.

reply

1) Could Jenny and the house create this spirit to manifest itself to the nephew for reasons unknown? Also, Jenny and her friend were talking about ghosts in front of the boy, could it just be his imagination?

2) Jenny and the house were in league together and brought about Luke's death? She was quite angry while at Walter's house, so angry the entity in the house revealed itself to Luke. Jenny doesn't need to be present, the house is controlled by her will whether she is there or not.

3) It seemed to be the combination of the two. The neighbor said the previous owners had no problems.

I have some questions of my own.

1) What was the meaning of the twins selective mutism? Did it have any relevance to the house? Or, was it about the strong will of these twins who chose not to speak and maybe, by coincidence, Jenny was of a similar nature. These twins broke their mother, was Jenny capable of this too?

2) Why did the lights go out at the pool? Was this Jenny's paranoia at work or was her 'energy' responsible for that too? She also senses a presence in the mother's house after she finds Walter's address in the mother's sideboard drawer.

3) Did Jenny's entity try to destroy the baby because she was unsuccessful in the past?
In the beginning when they first move in, Jenny glimpses herself in the mirror, and a box is covering her pregnant stomach from view. She seems to relish the idea of not being pregnant.

4) Was Jenny mad, bad and dangerous?

I, for one, thought this movie was great. One of the better haunted house movies I've seen in a while. Every bit as good as "The Conjuring" if not better. I think most of the hate comes from hardcore horror fans who need more blood and gore? To like "The Conjuring" and "Insidious" and not like this one is absurd. Very well done.

I do wish it was a little less ambiguous, but that also adds to the mystery. I personally think it was haunted, by a demon of some sort, and it wasn't simply in her head. But the movie throws hints at us that fit both scenarios.

Things started small; the knocking on the door/wall/ceiling, the crock pot top, the blankets in the crib, little things a pesky ghost would do. Things then seem to escalate like the entity was getting stronger. The scene in the basement, after Jenny and her friend's "séance", you could actually see the demon/ghost coming out of that hole in the corner. Surprised I haven't seen that mentioned yet. And what did her friend's kid see? He was waving at what he called "ghosts". The neighbor also mentions that the prior occupants left rather quickly. Also, the way all the doors were slamming when she was upstairs really had the feel of something "other-worldly" toying with her. Not to mention, the way she was being thrown about like a rag doll, eventually thrown down the stairs. This all leads me to believe it was a demon, or one ticked off ghost. I also thought it was interesting how the closing scenes of the movie showcased the house, I really thought the closet door was going to slam one more time, just before the credits. Which brings me to my next point...

The fact that the closet door didn't slam one last time at the end, was a hint that it was all in her head. Because you know the writers knew viewers would be waiting for it to slam (or creek open). The camera seemed to focus on that door for an eternity at that point. I also found it strange that during one of her more intense moments when she was freaking out, it all stopped the split second her water broke. Hmm, strange. Although that was also the exact moment Luke walked in.

I still tend to believe it was a demon of some sort. Although the more I type and think about what I just watched, I'm really not sure. At the end just before he is thrown out the window, Luke actually sees the shadow of the demon on the other side of a door... Could be her alter-ego poltergeist though, because it is timed right with her anger while she is at Walter's house.

Great movie. First assessment- 7.5/10. That could change after I sleep on it, though.

One thing that bugs me, after Luke moves the dresser in front of the closet door for her, he hears it move after he goes downstairs. He goes up and finds it blocking the doorway, and she's still in bed. Yet he never even mentions it. Maybe he assumes she got up and moved it?

Thanks for reading my ramble! Thoughts?

I think Jenny manifested everything. The incidents at the pool and her mom's house were all the result of her negative/hateful energy. I also think it's clear Jenny did not want to have a baby. I don't know if Luke talked her into it or sabotaged her BC, but she didn't want a kid so that's why her energy tossed herself down the steps.

After she found the handprint in the sand in the basement there was also a creature on the wall when she fleed..
I refuse to believe it has been created due to colliding energyzones..
