Had potential to be a really good horror film - some thoughts (spoilers)

The House on Pine Street had a great deal of potential, but the ending was the easy way out.

This is just my own personal thoughts, but some areas where it could have been better:

1) The choice of the house - Honestly that right there was out of place and to me, unconvincing. They could have just picked a more contemporary middle class house and it would have made for a better backdrop.

2) The hauntings in the house - It started out on the right foot, Jennifer's perceived suspicions of the guests at the house warming party, the odd friend of the mother's, and the "person" in the bathroom she walked in on. Good start but I slowly became disappointed by the moving furniture and creepy shadow and at one point, its hand appearing like many other films have done before it. The actress is good enough to have carried most of the tension just by her rising anxiety and suspicions coupled with unexplained events at the house. It reminded me of Rosemary's Baby in the beginning and thought it was going to go down that route.

3) The ending - the way the husband died...was the biggest disappointment of all. It also didn't follow the story at all. It struck me as random and a way to tie it all together.

Some good points:

1) The mother's friend gave great insight into what he thought was going on. Interesting bit of dialog with Jennifer and was a nice change/twist from the usual "you got a ghost/demon in the house. get help for it"

2) The dialog with the neighbor was also a good scene. I thought she was very convincing and interesting.

3) Too bad the writers didn't further tie in or pursue the story on the false mute twins. That would have added more flavor to the film.

All in all it wasn't a bad film in my opinion, but I think it's mainly because the actors were well cast and did their best. It's just too bad the ending wasn't better thought through. I wish the story could be reworked and filmed again with the same cast.

That would have been great.

For me this wasn't such a bad movie as much as it lacked some kind of stronger finale. The house just responding to her bad energy was not the best solution - if there was an underlying layer beneath this interpretation, ok, but there wasn't.
