A sit com with no com.

I don't dislike this programme at all but I can't remember laughing once. It's a nice gentle show which does make you smile but as for laughs there are none.

It says a lot about BBC comedy these days when their number one sit com isn't in any way amusing.

I usually get a giggle or two from each episode; but like you said "It's a nice, gentle show which makes you smile". I really like it and although I'm not champing at the bit for the next installment, will always watch it on i-player, at some point. Usually, when I want to relax, with a nice little piece of gentle comedy.

It had the highest ratings record on BBC 4! That doesn't make it the number one sit-com. It says a lot about the BBC, you're right. Auntie Beeb is great, catering for all tastes!

Really!!!

Oh come on, you didn't laugh at the opening sequence to ep four, the f**ing bas*ard scene?

reply

Not to mention the "Brokeback Mountain" joke references in S1, Ep5. They had to tie me in my chair to keep me from falling out laughing! One of the advantages of streaming is that I can stop and LMAO and not miss what comes next....or just rewind it.

The first episode was pretty devoid of jokes but it picked up in my opinion after that. I remember laughing out loud a few times in the next episodes. Sometimes just Mackenzie's delivery and not so much the line cracks me up.

reply

I laughed out loud quite a few times, the first 2 episodes weren't that funny but the whole premise of the show was interesting enough that I didn't really mind.

reply

I laugh a lot, not exactly the 1-2-punch of typical sitcoms but subtler...any interaction with Simon & Garfunkle always makes me laugh out loud. It's usually the throw away quips that are the funniest. I want Toby & Mack to be best friends in real life now lol

Someone who disagrees with you is NOT a hater 😉

I snort a few times, giggle some, guffaw quite a bunch and smile constantly.

Guess I like the show!

ep 3..."His name is actually Paul,"

I thought that was very funny.

But for the most part, subtle , witty, humor with no annoying laugh track.

Wonderful.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that it "isn't in any way amusing". I get a kick out of their announcing the vintage and brand name of the pull tabs (aka: the dreaded Beaver Tail). Of course, I share the hobby. Nice to see Diana Rigg, too.

I smile and laugh all through this.
Especially laugh out loud when Farmer Bishop is involved.
Russel and Hugh's dialogue is very funny sometimes.

It's not laugh out loud jokes like the Big Bang Theory...but the story is so engaging and sweet.
You care about them.
They are so endearing.
It's how you wish real life would be.

I really hope there are more series.
All the characters are wonderful, and it would be a shame to lose them from our screens.

reply

To all of the above: Exactly.

Always nice to see Diana Rigg. Interestingly here playing Becky's mother, as in real life Rachel Stirling is her daughter.
