craZY about this show---but BECKY is a b****h!

I cannot stand BECKY(Rachel Stirling)---she hates herself, and everyone around her.
I KNEW the minute she produced a child, she would try desperately to escape in the craziest way possible. Africa? Really?
Does this woman know anything about disease or parasites?
and how they would affect an infant?

She lives in PARADISE (English Countryside!), with fine schools, and government health care, etc. etc.
Why would she want to go anywhere?
She is the LOSER of all time!.

BISHOP (David Sterne) makes up for her totally. I love him to death. He is so real, and so funny in every way!

That's all a bit harsh and judgemental isn't it?

a) None of us are the perfect decision making machine.
b) Few people *REALLY* appreciate what is on their doorstep until they move away.
c) She was in pain. As far as she knew, her husband, who is hardly the most thoughtful of chaps, was having an affair with a younger model. So you put up with years of childish nonsense only to find he cheats on you. MANY MANY people in that position would want to run as far away as possible from that.
d) Anybody who thinks that a dream should be given up just because they have a child is never going to get far. Children who live an adventure lifestyle with adventurous, open-minded parents usually end up far more rounded as humans than kids whose parents never leave the housing estate they live on. There is no perfect model for raising kids. Growing up in Africa would be no worse than the druggies and drop outs they would have to avoid back home once they start exploring.

Not everyone who goes to Africa dies of something horrible, even if they are infants. Or else we might as well all stay at home appreciating our local library and hospital and wrap our children up in cotton wool. Most NGOs really look after their staff as well....

Agreed on Bishop. Love that character.

All of this, and crucially:

We see so little from Becky's perspective throughout the series -- far less than we see from Lance and Andy's. So it's no wonder that you (the OP, that is) more readily sympathize with Lance. The simple fact of the matter is that we don't know what Becky has to put up with at the primary school (and elsewhere) on a regular basis; the one and only staff meeting we were privy to seemed to suggest that it was a fairly stagnant and intolerable work environment (and the show writers even hinted at a poor relationship with her mother). She probably has every reason to get as worked up as she does, where she is -- we just don't know.

Nah. I just think she wanted more. It's like waking up and realizing you've been living the same day everyday for the last decade. Wake up, eat, go to work, come home, eat, go to bed repeat. She knows how smart Andy is, but wants and needs him to want more for himself and his family. The actress who plays Becky is really talented, especially in Bletchley Circle.

Becky is my favorite character (I like all, this is a really funny and good series).
Her baritone voice, too.
