Was it worth the Palme D'Or?

reply

Audiard is probably my favourite director at the moment and I can't wait to see this but I wonder if this is the result of the goodwill he has with the festival. The reviews have been good but many have said its not quite up there with his previous work.

reply

Not even close. Shocked it won.

reply

It's incredible this piece of trite won anything.

Right-wing propaganda disguised as a "social film", and it's not the first one like this, it's part of a whole European trend.

Parroting something you've read in the 'Cahiers du Cinéma'?

reply

Strange that a leftist/communist author would knowingly star in "right wing propaganda."

Sounds like OP has a motive.

reply

I gave it a 9 out of 10.

reply

It's an entertaining movie at least, but not nearly as good as A Prophet or The Beat That My Heart Skipped.

reply

Me too. It's a powerful film even if it's not my favorite by Audiard (one of the best directors working today). I personally preferred SON OF SAUL (absolute masterpiece), THE LOBSTER, and CAROL, but it would be unfair to call DHEEPAN an undeserving winner.

Without you, today's emotions would be the scurf of yesterday's.

reply

It started out superbly, until it went all Taxi Driver in the end.

reply

I haven't seen all movies that were in competition (including 'Carol' and 'Saul Fia', which are the ones I'm looking forward the most), but I loved 'Dheepan' and I think it's a very deserving achievement. Definitely in the top tier of Audiard's films.
