Is this realistic? Do such places exist in France?

It is hard to imagine that such a place exist in France. The criminals are in charge in this place. Where is the police? Why is there no public outcry?

reply

I live in France and I was wondering it myself since I moved here more than a year a go. My wife is French and she told me that such a places do exist! They are to be found in Marseilles, suburbs of Paris and certain post-industrial cities of Burgundy region.

reply

They do; that's the scariest thing about the film. Kudos to Audiard for not telling the usual fairy tales about immigration.

reply

Places like this exist in the US.

Yes, places like this exist in almost every western country

Cameron Diaz says marriage is dead. Marries a guy after 7 months. Drop it like it's legal precedent!

reply

Like where?

reply

Like London, Berlin, Cologne, Bruges, Dijon, Lyon from what I've seen myself.

It's actually true, most if not all bigger citys in 'immigration countries' have spots like this.

reply

No. At least, I've never seen anything remotely as bad as the Parisian suburb Pré depicted in this movie. I mean, Pré makes Sarajevo during the war look like a mountain resort in Switzerland.

reply

U should look at this place as if it was all Europe, or like a fake Varsovie ghetto around second world war... It may not be a complete imaginative place, but it is made so that u ask ur self more about... What is this ? It's surrounded by armies, for sure : u guess why. Morons have only one way to live and justify them self, its aggression, fake language, cars, baseball bates, guns, truck of money, armies and... sunglasses. And they nerver hide themselves. Their base is in... guess !

reply

Are you an idiot by any chance? The reason we do not see these places, is that any sane, White individual would not go near such hell holes. Wake up out of your fantasy world. Such places do exist.

reply

The suburb scenes were shot in La Coudraie, Poissy, Yvelines, France (housing complex in 'Le Pré Saint Gervais')

Do you really need to insult someone you know nothing about for a question like that? Calm down!

I would distinguish between mere bad neighbourhoods and outright no-go areas. Most British cities, for example, have dangerous and intimidating neighbourhoods, and gang culture is a growing problem. Even in my town there are places I would never willingly enter alone after dark.

But if we're talking about neighbourhoods that have been completely abandoned by the police, and where the gangs are literally allowed to run the place, setting up roadblocks and frisking people as they enter, then this is a completely unfamiliar phenomenon to me. I had heard of French cities having "no-go areas" but I always assumed it was an exaggeration. So, perhaps "Dheepan" reflects realities on the ground - I'm not in a position to judge - but it sounds credible that where you have the combination of high long-term unemployment, the poor and minorities being allocated to remote peripheral housing projects, and over-stretched law enforcement agencies, then this shocking situation could develop.

reply

Yeah that makes total sense because Europe has never had any right wing governments. Also I've lived in London for 20 years including areas with not great reputations and I have never seen anywhere even vaguely like the place in this film.

reply

Im French, I lived in Paris. Such place exists, however the police would not be inexistant like in the movie.
Shootouts are not so frequent as the movie would like to make think, but it does exist an extreme violence in parisian suburban.

reply

The movie La Haine depicts areas in France where there is animosity and discord between the police and the residents. The complex in this film reminded me of that.

Thank you for educating these morons. Fools who never venture out of their rich, White, suburbs, and believe places like this only exist in films.

reply

Yes. If you want to see more of this, I suggest you watch Gomorrah (italian tv show). The same type of environment is depicted. Housing buildings turned into drug markets. Even worst than Dheepan.
