Next weeks episode: The burn

How did they know to put the camera on the water can at that moment?

That smacks of staging.

As a viewer, take note of how events are shot on video and ask yourself, would they think to shoot these things before an accident happens?

How many cameras do they have?

reply

I have to agree. I'm not sure if this was the idea of the production team or the guys coming up with this idea to not look as bad about quitting. Either way it reeks of "reality TV" and I was hoping this show would be above that. I can live with planting pigs and man made water sources but staging their "exit" is going too far.

The black guy obviously used his kids as his excuse. I wonder what other excuses these guys will come up with. At the least the other black guy has a valid excuse to quit in his prolapsed rectum.

There are professional cameramen on the show. I dont get why people forget that. If you had the camera at the time when Jim was opening the can, where would you focus of the camera have been honestly? on Jim's face or the camera itself? There are about 3 cameramen in the group and every time they split up for group activities a cameramen goes with them. There are also GoPro cameras there as well that the participants also put on. Unless you are trying to say that they staged burning a man's face because you could see in his diary recordings that he was burnt.

Another thing you guys dont get is that these guys film 24/7. there is so much footage that doesnt make it and there are events that are not caught on camera and so ignored but because people only see the final product of edited footage that has events on them, you guys think these were the only things recorded and start having conspiracy theories about the convenience of cameras catching this when that is a fraction of the total footage taken on the Island

jidf32, I have some cheap waterfront property for sale? Great buy!

Perhaps you would like to invest in the lucrative penny stock market?

"Another thing you guys dont get" is my favorite statement in your whole post there.

If you honestly don't think they stage incidents like this on these shows, you are one of the most gullible people ever.

I don't forget there are professionals there as the camera work is too slick to be a couple of marks with handhelds.

There are too many things that smack of staging with that whole bit.

#1 the close up of the bottle. Camera's go on the people, not the objects unless they are being hunted.

#2 There was not a camera on his face or full body or anyone else when the accident happened. You film the people, not the objects. First thing they taught us back in college when we learned how to use the cameras. That's right, I studied a thing or two while in school.

#3 A steaming water geyser of 200 degree water hits him full in the face. His face looked no worse than a sunburn, which is easy to get on an island.

#4 No scream - Everyone screams when they are scalded - It is the natural reflex.

And as if there were any doubt about "Spicing things up for the audience, http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3040137/Bear-Grylls-new-fakery-row-producers-admit-spicing-TV-Island-extra-pigs-iguanas-crocs-water-coconuts-trees.html

Sorry, I really don't want to beat you up over this, but you had to jump all over it with the "You guys don't get" bit. Statements like that are only meant to belittle. It is like saying "You people" to one person. And you know what that smacks of.

Feel free to pick apart my comments and tell my why I am wrong.

reply

Nope, not gullible. I know that "Reality TV" is usually staged. I am just not a conspiracy theorist trying to find fakery in everything because they heard that The Kardashians are staged.

I also learnt a thing or 2 in school. when a person is interacting with an object on film you focus on that interaction and not on the person. When a person is using a phone for instance, you dont focus on his face while his is picking up that phone, that would be absurd dont you think? Same thing here, focusing on the guys face as he was opening a jerrycan would have been beyond ridiculous. Heck, The cameras have panned in on them breaking through crab armor as they ate it or cook it. Might as well be suspicious on why they arent showing the person and not the crab. Think thats number 1 down

#2 you saw the cop during his "Diary" entry and that he was clearly burnt. Or are we saying he is either a stuntman or Bear hired makeup artists to work him over and make it seem like he really was burnt? Think that is the question I should have asked first. What do you really think happened there?

I have seen those articles. This is the 4th season of the show that I am watching. I saw that a long time ago. Bear never made a secret of the fact that they placed some wildlife on the Islands. He says at the beginning and some parts of the show that he ensured that there was enough food and water in the Island to make sure the participants could survive. That isnt staging that is having the wellbeing of the participants in mind.

The show is not about leaving men on an Island without enough food and water for them to ever have a shot at survival and watch them die. It's about putting leaving men on an Island with enough resources for them to survive and seeing if modern man has the ingenuity and inventiveness to survive and thrive. That part I think you missed.

reply

No, you missed the point. The real point of the show is to mix up different personalities together to raise conflict. Everything else is window dressing.
Yes, people like to see struggle. They like to see people try, fail and succeed. But just as much time on the show is spent on interpersonal conflict. Why do you think there are always caustic people put on these shows?

The real question is, why are you supplying such a vehement defense of a reality show?

Are you on it?

Did you work on it?

Are you sleeping with someone on it?

Are you making money off of it?

Why are you posting on so many of these threads, defending this one little show? It will still be here. Bear has enough charisma to keep the show going.

Maybe you could go to ainticool.com and defend Harry Knowles for a while. He kinda needs it. This show doesn't.

reply

Nope, that what you think the point of the show is. Have you watched the British versions of this show. The first season in particular? The show is is to see if modern man still has what it takes to survive without life's comforts. Conflict will always be there because personalities are different. Your logic makes as much sense as saying that the point of imdb is for people to argue all the time because me and you are arguing about a show now.

It's not just caustic people there. there are also people who coast through the entire season without being seen much. The producers put people with different characters together, some submissive, some brash etc. You are bound have conflict but tell me one place without conflict? even churches have conflict. But is that the main point of the show? no. They show the conflict because it might be the most interesting thing on the day and to later show personal growth of the participants.

Why am I posting? What can I say, i'm on a crusade

reply

Agree 100%.
It is not staged, it's cameramen doing their jobs.

Was obvious he was going to be in for a face full of hurt, as the cans aren't vented.

reply

I wouldn't be surprised if the cameraman saw that coming, with the way that cop positioned himself before opening the cap he was going to get a face full of something - steam - or boiling water
