Armchair survivors, Y'all are funny.

I find it highly amusing how many people are slating this show because they think that it silly that these men can't seem to get their acts together. What I find more amusing is that these armchair survivors profess how if they were i that situation, they would have gotten water, food and built mansions on the first day.

It's very easy to sit behind keyboard with your sandwich you got from the kitchen talking about how it would be a synch for you if you were there but it's like many of you are not considering the fact that these are people with different personalities or is it that people don't understand the effects of dehydration, sever hunger or exerting lots of energy in the sweltering heat?

But I agree. It's easy to criticize from the comfort of your warm, dry house with a fully stocked refrigerator. I'm betting over half of us would be dead within 24 hours. I know I would.

I freely admit that I wouldn't last a day and would be whining the entire time I did manage to stay. That's why I like shows like this... to live vicariously through someone else. I love competition shows like Survivor, Amazing Race, and MTV's The Challenge (well, until recently) because I'm not the competition type myself.

When I was watching Episode 2 of this show where they were all desperately trying to find water, I was sitting on my couch drinking a huge glass of ice water... and I didn't feel even the slightest bit guilty. Those 14 guys knew that it was going to be an ordeal but they voluntarily signed up for it. I know better than to attempt something like that myself!

Armchair survivor maybe, but on day one being a marine aquarium keeper I would have known to use those huge metal cans to distil sea water..

put one can with sea water in the fire..

bury the other can in the sand below the first that is in the fire..

collect the steam using a palm leaf to run down the leaf into the other can

slow?..yes... works? yes... keep you alive?..yes

That's a good system. Only one problem -- they only had one jerry can. But yea, any kind of vessel could have been used to collect the evaporated water -- even half a coconut.

The show works because of the controversy and mix of ages and personalities.
We know they are going to have problems, otherwise why watch? The idea is to put 14 men together really to see who is smart enough to realize cooperating with others means survival. In the world they live in everyone thinks mostly of themselves not as a group member.
Most people miss the point that THAT is why most people wouldn't survive in a world stripped of its luxuries today.

I agree with you. I think this show is great because it seems realistic. These guys aren't in the army or survivalists. They're just average men that signed up to struggle for our entertainment. Personally, I can't wait for the next episode! =)

I like that about the show too. I just wish they would edit out some of the incessant whining and talk about feelings, and show some more actual SURVIVAL.
I get it that they have to cater to the female demographic, but come on.

learning to survive is a process that includes incessant whining. If you wanted production to only show the survival part then it would be a short season because that is probably something they would master near the end of their journey.

The problem with putting 14 people together(especially men) is that there might be 5 or 6 alphas in that group, or just people with different personalities and philosophies. They might not clash often, but you might find that the dynamic makes them less organized and so they might struggle for a bit.

I'm not complaining that a bunch of spoiled urbanites are gonna do some whining. Of course there's gonna be a lot of "I'm so hungry", I'm just complaining about the editors deciding to show so much of that sitting around on their duffs pissing and moaning. At least have them foraging or fishing while they're whining about their bellies or crying incessantly about the families they JUST realized they had left back in civilization.
