Thanks. Quoting the portion relevant to Toni Erdmann, this article (dated 12/17/16) says:

Maren Ade’s Cannes hit Toni Erdmann was a surprise success for distributor NFP. It opened in July after its German premiere at Munich Film Festival. Nineteen weeks on, it is still running on 35 screens with a gross of $6.9m (€6.5m) and admissions exceeding 730,000.

I guess that's considered good for a non-mainstream film. Contrast that against the top 25 films at the German box office in 2016 (almost all mainstream), which each took in between $11 million and $33 million.

In the US, as I write this Toni Erdmann has been in release for 9 days, screening in 3 theaters, and has taken in $110,000 so far. (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=tonierdmann.htm)
