Why was the mom totally cool with all these strange men in her house?

The mom just seemed....very shortsighted. Maybe kinda dumb? I know she was stressed and depressed and all that, but she was letting these strange men sleep in her house with her daughters there, and it just rubbed me the wrong way. People just sort of came into her home and she didn't really say anything about it. She also never really showed her kids any affection (here I'm talking about the first chapter as that's as far as I've gotten). Janet was clearly traumatized every night and yet an investigator is the one coming into her room and comforting her.

Something seemed to traumatize her enough to let police, then reporters, and then investigators into her house.

And she did have her hands full with four children.

Well artistic license was taken for one thing. This isn't necessarily 100% true and accurate of what happened.

Seen through the lens of 2015 vs 1977 though and all the stories we hear about child molesters, it does make one uncomfortable! LoL

How sad it is we think about that straight off whenever there's a strange man around children now.

As the Mother pointed out it was nice to have a "father figure" in the house. Also, the whole hysterical "OMG every old man is a pedophile!"-attitude running rampant today, to the point that some grown-ups are afraid to even go near a child crying for help, didn't really exist back then.
