"Lives Are Going To Be Destroyed"

Losing money is not a destruction of your life, even if it's most or even ALL of your money.

I'd say it has the potential to be. It sounds like you don't know much about financial management. If you have millions on paper and are taking out mortgages taking on debt backed by the paper money, you're going to be in ruin, and owing a lot of creditors. It's also human nature to struggle to adapt to a loss of lifestyle.

reply

Yeah, I agree. It's really easy to say that it wouldn't ruin your life when it's not happening to you.

WRONG! Lives were destroyed by Madoff!

I would say kids having to drop out of college, homes having to be sold, people committing suicide, retirees having to take minimum wage jobs, charities being wiped out, etc. accounts to lives being destroyed.

I have a phrase when arguments like this come up. Money may not be able to buy happiness, but in America it sure as hell can buy anything else.

Also, it may not be that vast wealth is a way to a perfect life, but severe poverty (or adjusting from a wealthy life to a poor life) is a way to have a miserable life.

Or, to paraphrase a line from Psycho: "Money may not buy happiness, but it sure can buy off unhappiness."
