Making Hyena Road as an apology for Passchendaele?

He realized he really ruined Passchendaele so he decided to make another Canadian war film?

Ha!
Funny.
Passchendaele had some good parts but was mainly wrapped up in awfulness and ridiculousness. Very disappointing.
The word so far is that Hyena Road is a much better film, so I'm hopeful.

It's no apology. The movie is full of the usual clichés, same as his other junk. No matter how it's rationalized he treats violence and war as titillation, and that sells tickets.

reply

If it was an apology, he probably wouldn't also be the writer, director and star of this one. He likely believes Passchendaele was great.

reply

Well he ruined this one also! What a s*itpile of a movie!

Instead of providing a view, albeit fictionalised, of what Canadian soldiers saw and went through in their decade long (and then some) mission in Afghanistan, we get to see the self masturbatory delusions of grandeur Paul Gross has floating in his humongous, empty head...

reply

Lol. Won't even bother to see this garbage.

His last film was a disgrace to anyone who served in the Canadian army in WW1, I have similar thoughts this will be a disgrace to anyone who served in Afghanistan.

His cliches last film were borderline vomit inducing - as in I literally actually threw up as he acted like superman without emotion. I'm sure this is more of the same.

Sad we don't have our own Tom Hanks or Spielberg who's actually interested in telling a real story with real people.

**** Paul Gross.

Maybe Denis Villeneuve will make a Canadian war movie some day ...

I just finished this one, and saw Passchendaele a couple of times. In terms of world cinema, yeah, neither of them are exactly stellar, but as far as non-fracophone film in Canada, both films were definitely better than average in terms of plot, production values, acting, etc.

Anglophone cinema in Canada has an awfully long way to go, but movies like this, not very good but at least financially viable vehicles to the rest of the world over cable channels, etc., at least helps to start opening the right doors.

Why would he have to apologise to trolls like you? Just because you didn't like it doesn't mean its crap...Lets see you make a movie then? Oh right I forgot your only talent is trolling..
