The ending wasn't that bad...

Hank was running away from reality during the whole movie. He was living in an imaginary world where he was stranded. The movie was his journey to go back to reality. At the end they all saw him for who he is (crazy depressed stalker) and you could see the disapproval/disgust in their faces. So he went back to his imaginary world.
