Is this a "Love It or Hate It" film?

I don't think I'll be able to watch this for sometime but I am very intrigued. Do you think this is considered as a "Love It or Hate It" film? I tend to put films like that higher on my priorities.

Go back to Westworld

reply

Yes, I think it is.

reply

No such thing. It's that kind of binary thinking that's destructive to art and philosophy in general.

reply

What do you mean by that? (genuinely curious)

reply

It reduces a whole nuanced spectrum of responses to two opposite poles. I don't think any film, or any work of art, or anything that allows for a very subjective appraisal, can possibly be received so simplistically. There are multitudes. There are ambivalences. This whole modern trend of quantitatively boxing movies into categories of reception, exacerbated by Rotten Tomatoes, has done much to hinder actual considered thought and criticism.

I really do understand your point of view, and would mostly agree. Nonetheless, I just saw this movie, and I would say it is typically a 'Love it or hate it' piece. Because I loved it, very much, but can really understand that one does not like it at all. It is hard to conceive certain aspects of the movie, being really surrealist and prone to too much interpretation. We don't all love the same kind of art, and this is a particularly strange type of cinema. I love when boudaries are pushed, but some love to have some bearings, to totally get what they are watching. And I can't blame them.

reply

He's just implying it's a polarizing film.

Generally speaking, when you have some form of art that takes a very different and original approach, it's usually the response you'll get. The jarring nature either impresses or falls flat.

Yes, there will always be people who fall into the middle but some films/songs/any kind of art just seem to draw more hate/love than others.

While I don't like anti-intellectualism, there is such a thing as over-intellectualism. Just shut up.

Based on reading other people's reviews, it certainly appears that way. I know I loved it and it is now one of my favorite movies.

I didn't love it or hate it. I thought it was fine. It had its moments. I really enjoyed some of the stuff in the woods, and I thought some of the smarter humor was really good. I thought it was really funny when Hank was explaining fetishes to Manny and Manny says "wow. Women must be really nice to let us do all that to them." A lot of the "I've never thought of it that way" humor was fun because it's a new (almost alien) view point on every day things. What I really liked about it was how it embraced love in a warts and all way. The worst, most private things about the human body were what made Manny special, and when they started getting into Hank's self hate, it was a good juxtaposition: the very things he loved Manny for (and what was saving his life) were the things he was ashamed of in himself. But all the farting killed the charm for me. It was fratish at times and a few parts seemed to drag a little bit. I liked it fine. I didn't have a really strong feeling about it as a whole. It does seem like a lot of people love it or hate it though.

Yes.

this film stars two actors i have a yuuuge distaste for. The trailer looked interesting but i find dano and harry potter incredibly annoying, as actors and as people.

reply

I went into this completely blind. The second I saw Dano I cringed. Then It just went completely overboard with infantile humor and never stopped. I was predicting what was going to happen all the way through. I thought to myself, what would be the stupidest thing to happen next and, bam. It kept happening. If someone told me a 12 year old came up with the script I wouldn't have doubted it for a second.

reply

I like both actors and still hated this movie

reply

Most likely, yes. I highly disliked it. It had a lot of potential, great acting, amazing score but I just couldn't handle all the fart and boner jokes. I don't mind fart and boner jokes but I don't see how it fits in the film. I see why people like it and I liked certain parts but the over the top fart/boner/etc stuff was terrible.

reply

Definitely. Kinda like Batman vs Superman 
