Sad coincidence (spoiler)
I suppose everyone else noticed that Mark was indeed planning to propose on the trip (Sarah found the ring box he was carrying), and that the finger she cut off was the ring finger on her left hand. :-(
shareYep, but I kind of thought he might be planning to propose when, way back at the start, they were talking in the car about marriage. When she said his new haircut seemed like something a guy would do to get ready to propose, then he started ranting about how against marriage he was, I thought right there "Hmm.... and he's going to surprise her later!" It seemed like something he would do to throw her off the track.
It was very sad and poignant when she found the ring box though.
It seemed odd to me that they'd reached the point where one would propose, yet they'd never had a conversation about marriage, so that the guy could surprise her with these ideas about never wanting to marry.

I never had a conversation with my wife-to-be about marriage. I just said, "Let's get married" and we did. People talk too much. Action speaks louder than words, etc...
...it's just another dumb film, get over it.
