If Gee Malik Linton was SO "disgusted" why'd he keep his WRITING credit?

And his PRODUCING credit?

That certainly makes it at least a little bit easier to deduce who might have directed it since his name is prominently listed TWICE elsewhere in the credits and on the poster. Guess he didn't want to completely cut himself off, you know.

And the kind of movie all the naysayers are claiming this was before Lionsgate got their mitts on it are conveniently (and purposefully?) leaving one thing out of their "white folks are evil" diatribes (possibly because they're too eager to scream racism instead of looking up filmographies on the IMDB): the fact that this is an "Emmett/Furla" film with yet another overstuffed roster of deep-pocketed wannabe "producers" and "executive producers" buying their way into the movie business with credits on shows made under the Emmett/Furla umbrella. Seriously, just look at the credit block on that poster!! It's absolutely jammed with "producers" you've never heard of, people with money to throw around and Hollywood glamour dreams who DONT BANKROLL SENSITIVE MINORITY-CENTRIC ART FILMS. Randall Emmett and George Furla are the modern equivalent of Menachem Golan and Yorum Globus, only without the sense of fun and adventure.

Again, the key names you all need to look up here are George Furla and Randall Emmett. These two DO NOT MAKE BORING AWARD-BAIT ARTHOUSE FILMS. They make BORING ACTION MOVIES and THRILLERS, far too many of them featuring "rapper" 50 Cent, who was apparently soooo busy this time around that his obligatory role went to Big Daddy Kane! If Linton delivered some Blacktino melting pot drama with big stars in minor roles as his finished cut, then he obviously DID NOT deliver what all of those producers on the Emmett/Furla "let's all go to Hollywood" gravy train had PAID for, let alone Lionsgate, longtime distributor of "products" from the Emmett/Furla assembly line.

So, because Linton retained his writer credit, it's a safe bet that nearly ALL the mediocre dialogue we hear in the trailer is HIS, regardless of what KIND of movie it's being marketed as, and if that's the case -- and it IS -- then it's no surprise that someone, somewhere, took the picture out of his hands and MADE it into the crime thriller it might as well have been from the beginning.

The claims of "whitewashing", therefore, are ridiculous, especially in a movie toplined by a HALF-ASIAN actor.

Explain to us all why he shouldn't keep some of his credits?

Op sounds like a jaded production member, because anyone else couldn't give two sh!ts about his writing credits for a person that did indeed write a good portion of the film.

It's from a book series written by John Sanders. Nickname of a private detective Virgil Flowers.

On another note, has anyone seen this movie?

reply

Thanks for replying to that question and getting it right! Nope, haven't seen the film yet. I have it on my harddrive ready to watch. I'll let you know what I think.

All I know is that I will never go see a movie directed, written or produced by this idiot again.

Horrible movie. Waste of talent, waste of time.

money.

I think that every decision by LG has been made from the money making point of view, but it is easy to presume by the released cut that there's a better cut within this film. I can understand why he doesn't want to be associated as a director to a piece of work that he doesn't feel like his own.
He still produced and wrote it. That's how the industry works.

It could well be that he was only contractually able to remove his directing credit. The Polish Brothers film The Smell of Success (credited to the non-existent Larry Smith) still retains their original writing credit. Besides, when a directing credit is removed like this, it is usually because other hands have interfered with explicitly directorial decisions, and the studio re-cutting the film against the director's wishes would fall into that category. They haven't interfered with Linton's script, nor his work as producer, so he probably - and I can only speculate here - didn't have grounds to remove those credits.

"Whitewashing" or not, Mark Kermode's comparison of the two cuts demonstrates that the Lionsgate edit is drastically different from Linton's version, so it's not surprising that he removed his directing credit.
