4.9 rating? So funny

While Marvel films usually has the score > 7.
This film got 4.9? WTF?
This film has a great story. The acting from actors are also great. Especially Keanu Reeves, the emotions, the feelings are portrayed beyond best.
Now i think people shouldn't look at IMDB ratings to judge a film.

This movie was very very bad. I think it is the worst movie I have seen in a few years. The writing is a mess, dialogue is horrible, performances wooden. I think it is worth a 4/10 at the most.

The Marvel films are at least entertaining, this was garbage. I will be avoiding the writer/producer/director of this movie from now on. If I see his name attached, I won't go to see it.

 maybe for people with the attention span of a 6 year old who think of any moving image as entertaining.

LMAO then you'll have no problem since his real name appears nowhere in connection with the movie. He asked to be credited under a pseudonym because the producers *beep* him when they reedited it completely.

You hit the trolls where it hurts the most. They weren't counting on you using intelligence and truth. They were instinctively using their Trumpadite method of making false statements. Since their kind don't usually read, they think everyone believes blindly.

Do you think you could at least attempt to use your own brain and come up with a comment that's original instead just copy/pasting bandwagon comments?

reply

I guarantee you, that there are also movies that you really dislike, while there are some other people who really like it.

In this case, it just happens to be you, that liked this movie, despite most people disliked it.

reply

yeah 4.9 is weird.
it's a 6 at least.

reply

characters are good but directing is messed up

reply

Well the director, directed a completely different film (Daughter Of God). Its Lions Gate that ripped it to *beep* changing the plot.

IMDB was quite reliable many years ago, but the ratings are hardly worth paying any attention to nowadays. I see way too many people giving movies either a 1 or 10 (numbers that should really only be used in extremely rare cases). Plus Keanu movies are always underrated. For some reason IMDB users seem to have a vendetta against him. On the other end of the spectrum, Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington movies are always overrated.

I think most of them aren't counted though.I think its called weighted distribution of ratings or something like that.Anyway it is a method they use to balance out extremes.

reply

I agree OP - the rating is surprisingly low. I found this movie to be quite unique in the way it portrayed its story and grave subject matter. I don't understand why people can't comprehend the two different perspectives that this film offers, and how they come together at the end. It also has an interesting twist, clues to which are present throughout and, if you've been paying attention, you will see coming; but with a rewarding sense of realisation rather than predictability. This is a thoughtful piece and I personally would give it at least 6/10.

I'm a half hour in. So far, it's just a long series of things happening while no concrete story has been revealed, nothing is really driving the plot or characters forward. If this script were to come to me for a contest or an agency I would not pass it on. The writer and director seem more interested in portraying the Latino community in a different light and using Spanish language on equal footing with English in a film. While this is admirable from a "let's be PC" kind of way, there still has to be a coherent plot, and driven story that doesn't drag. Make all of the points you want and please do break new ground but do it within the structure of a well written script and a good film.

reply

Okay, an hour and fifteen minutes in, no story structure to speak of has formed and it is pointlessly bleak. Dumpster bound. This is just bad.

reply

Okay, finished it. Crap that wants to be Shamylon or even his inspiration, Serling. However, both those writers knew how to engage the viewer from the start and move the story forward. In addition, while they had surprise endings, they tended to not make them quite so blatantly mundane and predictable.

In the end, 4.9 is fair if not overly generous.

I watch a lot of crime films but this is one BIG step above most. I will continue my comments but only for those people that have seen the film already.

SPOILER Here is a woman protagonist suffering from "post-traumatic stress disorder" walking down the road of mystic visions and even virgin birth. It's a story about what the mind can stand and cannot stand and the destruction of all our illusions.

All her male companions (taken in photos before a night club by a subsequently murderd cop) are killed off (by the end we know the cop's photos were of HER). Plus her husband then dies a few days before he is due to return from Iraq.

Now her mind snaps completely with visions of herself as a child being abused by her "step" father. When she finally kills her father (for his abuse of her imaginary child self) the reality is finally presented. It was her and her alone after suffering a rape from the corrupt cop that murdered him (2nd degree if you like). Becoming pregnant she is expulsed by her ex-husband's family (who refuse to believe her "virgin" birth) and forced to return to her "nightmare" parents and the "embrace" of her abusing father.

The secondary plot of a "good" cop discovering that his close partner who supported him when his wife died is more than corrupt. His partner's wife admits that he "confessed" to killing a suspect in a previous case. While he himself, the "good" cop, can sleep with his ex-partner's wife just following his partner's death. What is left of his morality and illusions?

The only plot "hole" was why the "good" cop rejects his son (being raised by?? in Florida). Perhaps he blames his son for his wife's death?? Perhaps in a director's cut this would be presented/cleared up.

Meanwhile all the criminal types have been killed off while suspecting each other of the corrupt cop's murder and even her brother-in-law ends up as a killer (in self-defence)./SPOILER

This is modern tragedy as lived in the Spanish Harlem streets.

Even in this cut version it is WAY ABOVE everyday crime films (e.g. TRIPPLE 9). My rating is at least a 6.5 and could be revised upward for a longer director's cut version.

reply

"Longer director's cut"

Honestly, I'm baffled. Regardless of the intent by the screenwriter and director to break down barriers or cover new ground, it was a muddled, poorly plotted out mush. Telling a good story well and engrossing the audience are the most important jobs. Sending messages, high artistic ambitions and being inventive are meaningless if you can't craft a good basic film structure. Fundamentals in filmmaking and storytelling are just as important as in sports. This film was like watching an overly confident rookie try to "ole'" simple grounders and then miss the throw to first over and over again. Painful.
