My favorite film which really introduce me to Robert DeNiro was "This Boys Life" Scorsese remembers getting phonecalls (presumably) where Robert DeNiro is praising Leonardo's acting skill. May not have been phone calls.

It was in person. De Niro kept inviting other actors and directors into the editing room to see DiCaprio's performance. He told Marty about it at dinner and other occasions.
