Don't worry, it's great!!

Yup, caught it in Zürich, thoroughly enjoyed it! Happy to answer questions.

Have sexual content? I'm not prepared to see Emma on that way, I'm afraid.

reply

Hah, that's.. sorry, won't judge you.

Well, I guess it depends on how you define the term, but the story do revolve around a young couple and there were definitely some... 'sauciness' there (for lack of better word) and... sequences of affection, but nothing explicit IMHO.

reply

OH! don't misunderstand me,
just I don't want that Emma turns on a sexual object she's better than that.
so, a thirteen years old child can watch this movie?

reply

Ok. (I don't see following as spoiler, since there are no details described.)

She's not reduced in that way, no; she leads the film. However the "male gaze", a more or less known term of this industry, I'd say from time to time is present in it, like most productions.

Suitable for 13 yo? No. Even if the accompanying adult is able to talk to the child, about the events that takes place, in a constructive and somewhat knowing way, I'd hesitate to bring him or her, at that age. The violence, language and tone of the film is, I think, not appropriate for anyone under 15-16.

reply

I thought when the film was announced would be feminist in all aspects, but when I saw the still and the trailer I worried about the way in which the character of Emma is shown, like another movies where we forced to view even the feminist character too through the male gaze.
So on a scale from 1 to 10 how much sexual content as you think? and on a scale from 1 to 10 how much violence?

reply

It's the business of moviemaking, I suppose. Money must be made and producers, executives etc. know such moves often are key to it.

But, as I've tried to convey, there were nothing I thought was prolonged of the sort you're anxious about; sexual content - with your definition - 2 of 10! Violence 8 of 10, gruesome and misogynistic.

The film isn't up for commercial release yet and I guess the promotion has been handled accordingly.

reply

Ok, thanks!

How would you describe the movie?

reply

I found it quite heavy, given the subject matter, and the performances, but all the less a really good ride!

Interesting, fresh, well executed and tense!! (it actually gave me a strain in my neck and back due to the suspense!!)

It manages to really draw you in and keep you close to the affairs of the camp and the politics it's ruled by.

Might be able to catch it again this weekend!!

reply

THANK YOU!

Can't wait to watch it!

reply

A film about Colonia Dignidad should have sexual content. Not explicit and not involving Emma's character, though.

Bbethany7 Are you a squeamish prude? "Sexual content" can't be condemned if it is germane to the story plot, and
if it is not thrown in for exhibitionist sensation. Emma Watson is an adult, no longer an innocent pre-teen. Give her, and the movie, a break.

reply

How was Emma's performance?

reply

She was excellent, good role for her! Portrayal felt legitimate and relatable.

reply

is she naked in this film?

reply

Yes, but off camera

reply

if she naked off camera then how do you know its her??

reply

take it, chmp. you just got pwned.

reply

She a professional actress. It's her.

All actresses say "If the role calls for it, I can do nudity."

Nudity was extremely important hère, even necessary.

Hell, it was a powerful feminist statement. And love...

reply

Are you for real?
You want to see Emma Watson naked in a film about a torture enclave, whose leader was a major pedophile?

Please excuse my terrible redaction, english is not my native language

reply

I agree 100% ..
This reminds me of a situation I observed decades ago while watching Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma by Pasolini; there had been a lot of discussion from censoring the movie up to banning it definitely (in UK it was released uncut only in the year 2000). Quote about this (1975) film:

[..]Because it depicts youths subjected to intensely graphic violence, relentless sadism, sexual deviance, and brutal murder, the film was extremely controversial upon its release, and remains banned in several countries.[..]
Well - in these days of pre-torture-p*rn-movies people went to see it because they had weird and confused ideas about different causes of censorship than hiding nudity: they were just attracted by a couple of naked butts on the movie's poster (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Saloposter.jpg) - those guys fortunately left the cinema when they realized what it was about.
IMO some people get more scandalized by a constructed "nudity-scandal" about a grown up former youth star than by crimes against humanity.
A lack of reality? Definitely YES!
By the way - I really was shocked by Pasolinis film - he depicted the misanthropic behaviour of fascism in a way that hurted deeply; it took ages for me to watch another movie by the same author.
Some years later David Bowie (RIP) would write
So where's the moral
when people have their fingers broken?
To be insulted by these fascists
it's so degrading
And it's no game

I would not compare Salo with this film, but I can see your point.

Salo was banned in Chile until 2002. Yes, Pinochet's legacy. Since 2002 NO film could be banned in Chile (unless illegal material of course).

Anyways, I can see why this film had a poor reception and it will be barely screened in a small cinema in Chile, because here, chilean people knows what Colonia Dignidad was all about, and NO ONE will ask if some actress has sex scenes, It is bloody COLONIA DIGNIDAD.
But for a foreigner, it's just another Emma movie.

Does the couple manage to escape the colony?

reply

yes

reply

Dont be fooled people. It's a 5 at best. 7.2 is a joke. It's an interesting premise but the film is awful. The acting and amateur directing/editing reminds me of a CBeebies production. The scoring is very good though so bonus points to the composer for having to endure it.

reply

This film is awful?

I would be interested to know what you think is a good film along these lines so that we could all have a good laugh at your expense.

C'mon, show us one of your films, we need a good laugh...

Oskars problem with Eli is not her ambiguous gender, but her ambiguous humanity.

reply

He's too busy trolling IMDB comments to be a film maker. I'll bet his real issue is that he didn't understand any of what he saw and is just mad that it went over his head.

reply

So you have to be a film maker to have a valid opinion of it ? I haven't seen too many cult films but one that springs to mind is the original wicker man which was excellent.

reply

The "cult film" to which you are referring, The Wicker Man, is ENTIRELY FICTIONAL! So you are comparing a situation created in Hollywood by Hollywood, to one that is real, has an actual location and a place in history. So it's not your opinion which isn't valid, it's the comparison itself. You are comparing the REAL to the IMAGINED.
And I'm not saying this as a slam. But if you're going to compare films, you need at the very least, to use films with a similar pedigree. The "completely fictional" to "based on a true story" just doesn't meet that standard.

reply

Just watched it. I really enjoyed it. It was suspenseful. I was rooting for the main characters. It was a little eery & not to raunchy. 8 out of 10. Maybe 7.5 imdb standards. Really enjoyed it.

reply

I've never made a film, but I have an opinion of his opinion. I have to accept his opinion with an extremely weak argument as his proof?

No.

He made an argument in public and I responded. If you can not back up your argument with valid points then you have no argument.

Simple.

Oskars problem with Eli is not her ambiguous gender, but her ambiguous humanity.

reply

Oh, BTW wcb if you want to see an excellent cult film try Schindlers List.

The one by Steven Spielberg.

Oskars problem with Eli is not her ambiguous gender, but her ambiguous humanity.

reply

lmao this guy.

reply

Well, he/she liked Transcendence, which I thought was lack luster at best. I give this a strong 9.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

reply

I very much enjoyed this, somewhat refreshing. Better than most recent films. Emma was great looking forward to Beauty and the Beast (her singing voice in Goblet of Fire was quite pleasant)and The Circle

reply

Anyone know if this is being released on blu-ray on Tuesday? Or will the USA just be getting the DVD?

reply

its definitely on bluray

reply

Emma Watson gave a great performance in this. However, I was distracted by how young she looks throughout the film (sixteen at best) and it took me a little while to adjust but she gave a strong performance.
