Bravo!

I agree. Depardieu is one of the greats of our time. I was delighted to see him in a series. I do find his obviously dubbed voiceover a bit distracting. Would much rather see a French version with English subtitles and him in his natural voice and language. It's just who he is, imo. That said, so far I'm really enjoying Marseille. There's a freshness to it that makes watching feel like I'm curling up with a good book.

Depardieu is for me, the most moving actor I've ever seen. If you can, be sure to catch him in Valley of Love opposite Isabelle Huppert. Maybe not the absolute best film, but boy, what a wonderful turn by Depardieu.

And please check your settings on Netflix - there is the option to switch to French audio with English subtitles. That overdub is absolutely horrible!

Yes and yes . . and thank you so much for the suggestion about changing the settings on Netflix. I hadn't thought of that. Sooo much better! Valley of Love sounds very interesting.

Effectivement, il a fait un travail extraordinaire dans ce rôle. C'est le meilleur rôle dans lequel je l'ai vu jouer depuis Cyrano De Bergerac.

I couldn't disagree more. For years now Depardieu has chosen quantity over quality and with Marseille it's no exception. Then again the whole production is shaky, with actors delivering their lines like it's a cheap soap opera, and a weak storyline to go with it. My 2 cents of course, don't spend it all at once!

True, Depardieu's made some questionable script choices over the years, but there are some real gems mixed in. When he's into a script and when he likes the director and his castmates, he's still wonderful. His performance in Saint Amour and Valley of Love are two recent examples. I loved him in Mammuth as well. His performance in Nicloux's The End is beautiful, despite the fact the scenario is thin and the film totally bizarre.
