Are Americans involved in this production?

My wife and I both have the sense that Americans must be involved in this production. The plot structure is so similar to that of many American films, or is it that directors in France are now so heavily influenced by Hollywood that they can't help but mimic our films? I don't see any reference to American companies here on this site.

I think you got that backwards. It's Hollywood that have been copying Europe film ever since the 50's. Many, many of the big Hollywood blockbusters are direct remakes of French or other European films.

The show was produced for Netflix, so the aim is to reach as wide an audience as possible. And at least one of the executive producers - Erik Barmack, who's the VP of Netflix's acqusitions division - is American.

They wanted to make a french House of cards. The result is very very bad.

reply

Well House of Cards is british...

Ed Powers = Woody Allen

reply

Yes, i forgot that. But let's be honest, it's the US-version that became so famous and popular.

reply

Perhaps, but the UK version of House of Cards is more subtle and brutal. Better and even more engaging.
That said, back to this series (Marseille) I agree with both of you that it is marginally entertaining but a really recognisable story arc and almost charicatured characters.
