The movie everyone is talking about

I've seen Meet the Mormons. I attended an advance screening of the movie a couple months ago along with my colleagues from the Church History Department in Salt Lake City. Go see it when it comes out this weekend!

As a historian my career is spent capturing stories of people. Meet the Mormons does that superbly. I've met and interviewed Jermaine Sullivan, the African-American bishop from suburban Atlanta who is featured in the first segment. He and his wife, Kembe, are amazing faithful contributors to the Atlanta community. As I watched the story of the humanitarian from Nepal, I wondered what my adopted son from India will do in his future. Will he make choices to go and serve the people of his homeland? The final story is about the Missionary mom, who got pregnant as a southern teenager and raised an African-American son in Utah. You could feel the amazing grace that has led her from an early life of destitution to a full and wonderful life by changing and making good choices.

The movie captures ordinary lives that all of us can relate to. Whether Mormon, Catholic, Hindu, or Islamic, if you stop and learn about people's good lives, you can see instances of the manifestation of God's hand within His children. Don't be surprised when the movie isn't about our doctrines or doesn't have a 1-800-number to call the missionaries. Yet those who watch will have their curiosity increase about why we are the way we are. It shows how good members of the Church impact their communities. Heartily recommend it!

Seriously? "The movie everyone is talking about?" Is your social circle comprised exclusively of the producer and director of this film?

I hadn't heard anything about this film until a mormon friend posted something on facebook. By the title, I assumed it was a satire film, like Borat, or Bad Grandpa. After all, who would go to a serious movie about people you ordinarily try and avoid in social settings?

But I digress, literally no one is talking about this film. Its actually a challenge to find a review for it even!

My question then is this. If the initial reviewer (whom I am assuming is a devout member of the LDS church) plays fast and loose with the truth, and claims everyone is talking about this film, how honest will the film be when dealing with some of the "trickier" aspects of the mormon history? Will they ask the african american man how he feels about being a slave to mormons in the next life (according to Brigham Young)? I am guessing not.

At the end of the day, my question for the initial review is this: when you say "everyone is talking about this film" are you "being honest with your fellow man in all of your dealings?"

Oooooo! Check it out! "Brother" jwissard was likely once a member of the LDS Church.

jwissard,

Try to relax. Are you really so insecure in your life and your own spiritual growth that you actually think this person's thread is going to convert people to the LDS Church? Why can't you leave him alone?

As a member of the church, I'll go see it at some point. I think it will be good.

As far as your question:

We're saving that for the sequel. Hope to see you opening night!!!

Poor actionlad! Why can't you allow people who have differing views to post them without ridicule? That's pretty arrogant and un-Christlike.

reply

And what is it that you have been doing as well, "Brother" Rodriguez?

You say I am ridiculing people for disagreeing? Your IMDB history shows you've only been posting on the threads for this movie.

It doesn't take much to concluded that you created your profile just so you could bash on this movie and the LDS church. Am I right? Please answer my question.

As for being "Christlike" you will note that I had told you I didn't think I was perfect, therefore I am not like Christ. He was perfect.

However, I find it interesting that many people, your self included, think that Jesus just rolled over and let his detractors talk smack about him. There are numerous instances in the New Testament where he calls out his critics. I I guess you could say I am doing just the same as Jesus did.

First, asked and answered in another thread. I may not be posting with my normal IMDb handle, as I know that the church's leaders and the SCMC often troll around to root out so-called "apostasy". Even if that "apostasy" is based on the church's own records. Don't believe this happens? Just try a little googling.

Sooo, anyway, if you're not Christlike, nor trying to become like such, what are you? Just a poor defender of the faith? Maybe your handle should be "Danite".

Regardless, I'm pretty sure I don't need lessons in being Christlike from you. Obedience to the church and its teachings does not equal being Christlike. Numbers of baptisms and real estate does not equal a Christlike meekness. But you know this.

reply

Ha ha!

Church leaders are trolling for apostasy online. Good one!!!

If you're so worried about them checking for apostasy, then why are you questioning all of the doctrines online? You're confusing me.

Ooookay...now was that one pill or two you were supposed to take for paranoid delusions every 4 to 6 hours?

Oh oh! You gonna tell me I'm being unchristlike again?

Regardless, I tire of this debate. Detractors and critics will continue their rants.

Have fun, boys. It's been nice. I'm sure all the "haterade" that follows will make your day.

reply

Yes, the church is trolling for apostacy. An doubting mormon friend of mine made a comment on a website using a psuedonym, but apparently based on past posts there was enough information to identify her location and biographical data.

She was called into her bishops office and confronted with her comments.

Creepy? yes. It smacks of 1984. But mormonism is not a cult.

reply

It's not a "paranoid delusion". This would be the Strengthening Church Members Committee (SCMC). Yes, it exists, and yes, it does monitor online communications. Your ignorance of it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Mormonism is a provable fraud - the Book of Abraham and the modern translation of the facsimiles conclude that Smith had no ability to translate. It seems at every turn it is non mormon's helping mormons to see the reality of the falsehood of their claims, only for a few mormons to spin another yarn about what translation really means (in contrast to the dictionary definition).

Defend as much as you like, you're the one spouting propaganda, in the face of historical information that the average reader can simply form their own opinion on when fully informed.
