why so many low ratings?

I mean this is a pretty unique and original topic for a documentary, and I am actually kinda interested in seeing it (btw I am not even gay)

Evidence that homophobia is alive and well!

Just because it has low ratings doesn't mean that people are homophobic. Just like if you give barbershop 2 a low ratting, it doesn't mean your a racist. I gave it a 6 instead of a 5 only because I was being generous because I liked the premise.

The film's premise and the talking head segments are great, but then the director goes totally off-topic and drops the interview segments. He bogs down the second half of the film whining about his own voice. He goes to a vocal coach to try to sound less "gay" and more manly, and he is so insufferably self-loathing about his gayness that by the end of the film you just want to slap him. A total waste of time.

And, yes, I'm gay, and I'm one of the low raters. I gave it a 2.

I do like the rainbow tongue box art, though.

I just finished watching it, and found it insightful and very well done. That score makes no sense at all.

Just the usual homophobes. I must admit, I sometimes give Christian themed movies I've never seen 1 ratings, just to even the score in my mind.

reply

Maybe you give them 1 ratings because you're a twit...

reply

well it would be kind of hypocritical of you to criticise homophobes for doing the same thing now, wouldn't it? Also, Christianity and homophobia are not the same thing.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Because the movie is just not that good. The subject is interesting and he does a pretty decent job of explaining many of the supporting points. But, the segments about his journey to change and then his failure to actually do so, fell flat. ANd so, overall, the movie was worth only a 5 or 6. Not bad, but not good.

It's honestly probably not that great a film (the RT score has it at 6.7), but that's not why it's getting low ratings...

Everything to do with low ratings on this film is not about homophobia. I'm gay, not self-loathing (what's that about?) and was very meh about this film. I would have rather seen a documentary about a 40-something gay man try to meet a new boyfriend in the youth-obsessed gay culture of 2016, than worrying about one of the most petty things you can worry about, your "gay" voice.

This documentary was only good during the interview segments, but even then, you could tell that some of the interviewees were thinking, "I don't really know what to say because this is a stupid subject to be making a documentary on."

I gave it a 4, but only for the interviews and the opinions of Thorpe's friends, who rightly recognized that there was WAY more going on with Thorpe than how he thinks he sounds.

because it's a cop out cheap documentary. Your voice may sound more feminine if you were born with more estrogen than other men. This whole he's straight but can sound feminine and he's gay but his voice is deep, it's silly. Easy way to make money because it's saying don't bully men with feminine voices but it's trying to dress it up as about more than that.

Is it worth a one though? Currently it's the most common rating on this documentary.

You also can't deny that most people in the U.S. (myself included) associate that nasal cadence with being gay. That association also has little to do with the pitch of the voice. For example when I hear Gabriel Iglesias' voice, I think cartoon character, not gay.

I really don't see this movie as a cash grab. It reminds of the documentary "My Penis and I". Both about self-concious men who are toying with the idea of changing a part of themselves they dislike.

I just watched this and came here. I'm surprised it's rated so low as well. I found it informative and entertaining. What gives?

I gotta go feed that thing in Room 33.
