did they make it out of the loop?

the very end was a little vague, i'm not sure they made it out

reply

i'm not sure if they could have made it any clearer that they did.

didnt you notice when they went thru the barrier ?

reply

Yes i noticed that and i also noticed the unusual bird pattern behavior after they went thru and i also noticed all the other times they went thru the smaller barriers but were still trapped within the major loop confinement of the entity, so both of these reasons did not completely convince me that they actually made it 100% out of the greater loop. The only thing that may be convincing to me that they may have made it out is the look on the faces of the cult members as they watch the brothers leave the destructive storm area. So no it was not as clear as you put it, or as i would put it "obvious".

reply

it went from night to day, they crashed thru the border, they said we made it, the cult members all looked on, happily.

what more could have been done ?

reply

Those things were not definitive, i have seen many films with abrupt and/or inconclusive endings where writers and directors leave the conclusion open-ended and up to the viewer's interpretation. One example for me for this to have been a clear-cut, is if they showed them arriving back home in the city or at least entering the city, however, it only shows them barely escaping the edge of the destructive force, but what actually created my doubt was the camera showing the same bird pattern behavior that it showed near the beginning when they were arriving at the edge/proximity of the phenomena.

reply

ok. i prefer not being hit on the head, but that's just me. if you see some remaining ambiguity, that's your interpretation.

the bird pattern is a flock of starlings, i expect. they do that in real life. its quite something.

reply

Yes, so what was the relevance and point of showing it after they supposedly make it out of the loop? oh, and if you watch the prequel to this movie "Resolution", where there was no actual resolution because both friends are actually trapped in their own "endless" loop, so the irony will probably show that in the sequel to "the endless", the brothers are also trapped in their own "endless" loop.

reply

we know the brothers are no longer trapped in their co-dependent loop of older brother micro-managing younger brother. there's another loop broken.

the other aspect is, i think the other persons seemed to realize they were trapped. these two seemed to believe they were out of it.

maybe others will weigh in with their own interpretation. in my view, if that was the writer's intention, they sure buried it well.

reply

I agree with the thread starter, it wasn’t clear if they escaped or if they started another loop. The birds, the car which “always” is on empty which the older brother never knew about, the reboot for the people at the camp. I mean really, it very well could have been their loop is going in and out of the loop.

It doesn’t matter really, this was an agonizingly slow movie with very little happening until 75% to the end.

reply

I'm also confused. I think they didn't escape, because there was a wall showing the birds unable to cross it. I think they crashed the car and died. Then it was a restart of them being in a car but still trapped in the loop.

reply

^^^ This was also the impression I just got. Seemed to me the car was slo-mo shattering against the same barrier the birds were repelled by. The touching "death bed" chat (remember the quote at the beginning) about them becoming equals instead of the older brother dominating was meant to be ironic, I thought. Finally they come to an understanding, only to have it erased so they have to start over.

reply

They made it out. They threw out a few nuggets to make you think there was a chance they didn't, and to make it ambiguous. But using the movie logic, they clearly made it out.
The reason?
The little brother was driving. When the loop began, big brother was driving.
They made it out.

reply

Since I made that post, I actually came around to the other position already. I do think they got out, but it could have been ambiguous without mixing signals like that. In any case, I still enjoyed the movie either way.

reply

I hope not. all those characters were idiotic

reply

Yes, I believe they did, which made me feel good.

PS I LOVED this film! 8/10!

reply

I liked this film more I thought I would--having low expectations helps.

My vote is that they got stuck in a loop. Just seemed to me that this time around, they could not escape that place no matter what, especially seeing all the others who were caught in loops.

I just watched an explanation video, and in the comments someone suggested some evidence to back you up.
He suggested that the brothers were in a 10 year loop like the camp's. Here it is:

I love films like this which are left open to interpretation!

"I love films like this which are left open to interpretation!"

Exactly!, these are the ones that leave a "memorable impression" to think and ponder long after the film ended.....exercise for the brain.

reply

Yes!

Have you seen their first movie "Resolution?" There were wild speculations about what the end of that film meant. These were all shattered in "The Endless", as that film was interwoven into this film.

reply

No, I did not find out about it till after I watched the "the endless" and read about it on a forum where there was a detailed explanation about it.

It's an excellent film.
