Are The Olsen Twins Being Selfish?

So obviously the question I want to pose to everyone is do you think Mary Kate and Ashley are ultimately being selfish for barely acknowledging the show? Now we've all heard the reasons why they can't appear. Ashley hasn't acted in years and doesn't feel comfortable in front of the camera. Mary Kate has a busy schedule with the fashion enterprise. The thing is, this show has been on for a whole year. They couldn't even be bothered to call in and make a "voice cameo"? There was a perfect opportunity in one episode where Stephanie calls Michelle.

Whether you like the show or not, Full House was a cultural phenomenon. I feel like they owe it to the fans to make some kind of appearance. Like I said, even if it's a quick phone call, that alone would be a big "thank you" to all the fans over the years. Instead it feels like they could care less. So what is everyone else's thought on this?

I agree with you.

Here is my opinion: those girls from the minute they were born worked like dogs. Full House, movies, video's clothing lines. Anything their parents could put their name to. '

While they are richer for it i can see why they want to put that time in their lives far behind them.

Even a cameo on Fuller house would bring world attention and i don't believe that's the type of attention that they want anymore.

The easiest thing i have ever had to do was give my heart.

I feel like everyone is actually right no matter which side you fall under (the "the Olsen twins should do it" camp or "the Olsen twins don't have to do it" camp). Both sides have completely valid opinions as to why, and at the end of the day both sides would be right. But ultimately it's up to the Olsen twins. Whatever choice they make I feel like we should respect it.

reply

and who also is going to play michelle......they both had to play her because well they were little....but they aren't anymore....so who would play her, and leave the other behind...

when they were in all their other stuff it was always the two of them...now it can't be....

well unless they bring on the cousin from greece who looked like michelle and everything...but...

i agree, lil......they have worked, and worked hard....so let them enjoy it....

if they want to act again, then ok, if they don't, then ok by that too

Well, they could have both there and address them as one person like the finale of Girl Meets World did with the two actresses who played Morgan. Lol, boy would that be weird though.

That said, I don't think they should come back if they don't want to do so.

Someone suggested they should at least do a picture cameo with a caption. It would be funny if their cameo only consisted of a selfie sent to DJ or Stephanie. It could be of both girls. The caption could say: "look, I found my doppelgänger " lol. But only if the girls agree to make even that much of an appearance. It is their choice.

reply

No, they don't owe it to you or me or the fans. They were employed by the show. And even if everything they got afterwards were all thanks to the show, the fashion empire and the billions of dollars, doesn't mean they are obligated to make an appearance. They have grown up and moved on. They worked a lot when they were young in entertainment and probably had a lot of people employed under them dependent on them for their own lives and income. It seems like they both have negative reactions to being in that same kind of spotlight, and even Ashley has talked about her anxiety. So actually, the fans are being selfish to think that they are owed something.

How many of us still care about the things we did as 8 year olds?

reply

I agree. As soon as the twins were old enough to fully understand that they didn't have to act anymore, they pretty much stopped. Before that revelation, they probably thought that acting and being in movies and TV all the time was "just how it is". Granted, I'm sure tons of people would trade lives with them in an instant, but still, show biz is probably not all that it's cracked up to be and comes with a lot of anxiety and stress.

I agree

I get that but we're not talking about putting them on the show permanently. Seriously is it too much to ask for a 30 second phone call and say a catch phrase or two? Even Donnie Walhberg made a 10 second appearance when New Kids were a guest on the show. There's something to be said about loyalty and doing things for the benefit of others even when you loathe to do it. From what I understand the cast is like family. I know they were young but these were people you grew up with and they are quite literally begging you to do it. I feel like it ultimately comes down to "think of someone other than yourself". Seriously, even a quick selfie with text on the bottom would suffice.

reply

They are the CEOs of multiple companies. I can't even find time to call my mom...seriously, why don't people see the Olsen twins as people instead of these commodities. I bet that's how they view their childhoods. It was Donnie Wahlberg's priority to make a cameo. If the Olsens don't want to do it, then they don't need to do it. I wouldn't give a crap about what the "fans" are begging. I would tell them to let it go. It's weird that you would rather coerce them into something they have already addressed, because of your own pleasure. Talk about thinking about someone other than yourself.

reply

Wow you sound a little angry haha. I'm not trying to antagonize anyone here but didn't you just make my point? "I wouldn't give a crap about the fans?" Really that sounds a bit selfish.

I know they're people and not a commodity. My point is, you have a community that is continually saying to you, "Please be on the show or give a call or something." When you have thousands of people saying that and you decide, "I don't want to do it. I don't have to do it. Screw everyone." That's when you really have to consider that there's some selfishness going on. Not that they've done that. In fact, besides the initial confirmation that they weren't going to be on the show they haven't said a thing. That was over a year ago.

I have a busy schedule too. I work 7 days a week over 40 hours but when someone asks me to help them with something I try to set some time aside to help them out. Michelle making some type of cameo would put a lot of smiles on peoples faces and I think we can all agree that's a good thing. So is it too much to ask for them to make a 30 second phone call to put some smiles on thousands of people's faces? I don't think so. And not to get personal but you should probably call your mom. She probably misses you.

reply

But the problem is that it WON'T end there. If they come on the show, even for a cameo, they will not hear the end of it. Their appearance would be trending all over. People would want more and more. They're drawing their line in the sand and keeping it there. Media buzz is already dying down over the Olsen twins because the show already finished two seasons and it's clear the twins aren't coming back. The show is doing fine without them.

reply

Yeah, the show is going into a 3rd season and the Michelle references are enough.

if and when they're ready to come back they will...but it should be up to them, if they come back or not..

i mean i can't even watch the show because i don't get net flix....so...

susan

and didn't the first three or four years of empty next, only talk about the third daughter emily....

and didn't she only come on the show, because well kristy mcnichol couldn't do it anymore because of her mental stress....

shows have gotten rid of kids in the past...as long as they mention michelle every once in awhile, ok..

I think you're deflecting by pointing out everyone else's selfishness and not recognizing your own. Look, if you're not in entertainment, it doesn't really matter in the long-run if you can give someone a temporary smile on their faces. Fan entitlement is a strange phenomenon. This isn't a thread about their altruism, but you want to equate it with something like that. I am the same age as them, and I can remember how their acting and physical appearances have been heavily criticized over the years. I remember their SNL appearance when they even poked fun at it, with Mary-Kate playing a paparazzi and yelling at herself to "Eat a sandwich!" Even now, with Elizabeth Olsen gaining popularity, people can't seem to compliment her beauty without also putting down the twins and how they've aged and are dating old men. Like poster above me has said, they are drawing a line, and it's no wonder they have been so reclusive as they aged. But you rank your entertainment pleasure as more important than these things, because you do see them as a commodity even if you say you don't.

reply

I agree. I would rather the Olsen twins do something that they really truly love, something that they both willingly choose to do & genuinely want to do, and also something that's healthy for them & sits well with their soul at the end of the day (a.k.a. fashion), rather than them doing something that they were forced into doing before they could barely even speak a single word (a.k.a. entertainment).

As far as to how the show can utilize the Michelle character without the Olsen twins in the role, I honestly & personally feel like the writers can find much more creative, tactful, & respectful ways to write the character into the show without taking shots at the Olsen twins. For a random example: say like with the pilot episode for this series. The writers could've done something where DJ receives both flowers and a handwritten, heartfelt letter from Michelle expressing her condolences for DJ's loss, and how much she truly loves & cares about her family (including her nephews) despite her not being able to be there. Write some sort of logical, career-related reason as to why Michelle can't physically be there (perhaps due to her career-field she lives in an entirely different continent altogether, and also it's a career that keeps her extremely busy all the time). Have DJ read the letter out loud so the audience knows what Michelle had wrote.

That's just a random example, but I feel like the writers in general could just write much more creative, tactful, & respectful ways to include Michelle into the series (handwritten letters, phone calls, mailed birthday gifts to her family, mailed Christmas gifts to her family, etc.).

It is nice that you make time to help others out, but still that is your decision.

The bottom line when dealing with other people- don't hurt them.

Beyond that you do not "owe" anyone the obligation to make them happy, particularly if that makes you unhappy. That is not healthy.

So is it too much to ask for them to make a 30 second phone call to put some smiles on thousands of people's faces? I don't think so.

Hhmm. Let's turn this around. They made a decision about their lives, and what make them happy, that does not harm anyone else. So, is it too much to ask for you to respect their decision? I don't think so.

The brothers in NKOTB are Jonathan and Jordan Knight. Donnie's famous brother is Mark Whalberg, who is a big movie star (and former rapper).

"Even Donnie Walhberg made a 10 second appearance when New Kids were a guest on the show. "
Yeah, I just watched Netflix and saw the first and think a lot higher of him (after his shenanigans offscreen in the 1990s) for not being too hip to work on Fuller House.)

It's got enough cast members so that whether the Olsen girls appear or not does not matter.:-)

reply

Exactly.

A bit of the old ultraviolence...

In all honesty I don't think they are. Sometimes it's actually kind of cool when some of the characters don't appear in the reboot and they can give some sort of off the cuff reason for them being gone. In all honesty it works nicely as now I can watch the cast poke fun at them in some of the episodes ;)

reply

I don't think they are being selfish at all. They have not acted or been in the spotlight for years, so why would they want to now? They have successful careers and are still busy. Also considering their young age when the show finished, I'm fairly certain they don't have nearly the same sentiment for it as the rest of the cast. I also don't miss the Michelle character at all. Apparently the original idea was for the 3 daughters to be involved, but the show works better with Kimmy because she acts as the Joey replacement. I think even if the Olsen's made an appearance it'd probably be a letdown since they aren't really interested. The other cast members seem to have a real enthusiasm for being involved which shows through. The Olsen's would probably just look uncomfortable. I think Bob Saget already seems more like acting as Bob than Danny (and Bob was notorious for kind of hating the show but I guess came around on it now), but the rest of the cast seems truer to their original characters. I just have a hard time feeling the Olsen's would be believable and I also question how they'd have Michelle act now. They've done a pretty crappy job with the young adult twins Alex and Nicky if you ask me. I think the passing references work, although I'd prefer no more jabs at the twins.

Additionally, the Olsen's do not seem fond of the public light and attention. I've read one has anxiety, so appearing on Fuller House really isn't going to help. Mary-Kate had the public anorexia issues. I am sure they just don't want any of that public scrutiny anymore. I'm sure some of the press would just hound them far more if they did make an appearance. Everyone would continue calling them selfish for not making as many appearances as some of the other original cast members. I think people need to just let it go that they won't be on. I wouldn't even care if they recast Michelle and had her briefly pop up from time to time like Danny, Jesse, Joey, etc. Considering the last time we saw Michelle she was still a child, I don't think it'd be that big of a deal to cast someone new.

reply

I personally think all the backlash they get for not returning is what comes off as selfish. They were put on this show as infants, before they could ever have a say in whether or not they wanted to do it. As they've gotten older and have actually had a say in their lives, it's become clearer and clearer that acting isn't something they want to do anymore, especially in Ashley's case. It's not like they're refusing to do the show for a bunch of other acting projects - they just don't act anymore. Why shouldn't they have that choice when they never (or barely) did in the first place?

reply

I honestly don't miss them. The show isn't about them anymore, and I can't say I'm sad about that. They had their time, and hopefully it was a good time for them, as I'm sure the amount of work they did was exhausting. But now, a joke here and there adds to the new show, and there is room for other characters. I enjoy the cameos very much, but don't feel the need for them to be in every episode either.

reply

They never asked to be on TV and were put on Full House before they were even old enough to decide whether or not they even wanted to do it. Why should they feel obligated to take time out of their schedule to do this if they don't want to? They're adults with careers that they're committed to.

reply

I get that, but it's hard to believe they are in the fashion industry, considering they both look like they need stylists.

Well said!

I'm fine with Michelle's absence. I just find the digs made towards them bt the characters are rude and tasteless.
