Good show but guys like this don't get hot chicks

The entertainment industry never tires of portraying loserish guys getting hot girlfriends and wives. I can't count how many TV shows and movies have done this. In the real world it rarely happens. Kind of takes me out of the show.

reply

Oliver Cooper is really hard to look at, especially when he smiles. The fact that Misty could even be remotely interested in him, shows me they were portraying her as an attractive poor girl. I mean Wheeler's poor himself and selling drugs to make extra bread.

I might be biased against Cooper though because his season 7 season in Californication was absolutely brutal to watch.

I think Craig Roberts is pretty hideous too. I see no reason why the daughter of the owner of the club would go for him either. Even Jennifer Grey's husband in the show is hideous. It's like an alternate reality.

reply

Yeah that's a weird casting. Grey and Kind? Gotta be at least 15-20 years age difference. Kind was playing married men 70s sitcoms when Grey was still in middle school.

reply

Kind was born in '59 and Grey was born in '61.

reply

Sorry, Grey was born in '60.

Craig Roberts has some natural charisma. He is not exactly good looking, but he is not especially ugly. That Wheeler guy on the other hand... he does not even have a winning character, which could compensate his lack of looks by extraordinary wit or whatever. There is just nothing.

reply

Each to his/her own, but I find Craig Roberts quite attractive, plus the character is thoughtful, intelligent, fairly sensitive and kind, and has a nice body and sense of humor. I love Richard Kind, and find him pretty perfect for this role. He's playing a 50-something-yr-old striver/schlub, who's worked very hard to only disappointing success in many ways. Life has been wearing him down, but he still has such a lovely smile, and great eyes. One can easily see where he would have been pretty darned cute as a younger man, and he's not bad now, especially given his kind and humorous menschlichkeit.

for gods sake Criag Roberts isnt ugly

you want to see Ugly look at Keith Coogan in the 90 today he looks like his grandfather Uncle Fest almost completely bald and fat now

Look like Tarzan talk like Jane! HAHA

reply

So, basically you're saying hot girls are shallow and would never go for a guy who isn't hot.

reply

Shallow? Not really. Its a matter of supply and demand. An attractive female has the choice of more potential mates than an unattractive one. More choices = more attractive guys to choose from. People generally seek those in their own social strata.

reply

Or they at least choose guys that have money. But at that age looks are almost as important as money.

reply

Exactly. One of the most egregious examples of this (beyond the 'King of Queens' Leah Remini being remotely attracted to Kevin James, which can never be outdone) is the Rob Schneider movie The Benchwarmers, Schneider gets to be with Molly Sims. My eyes can't unsee that!

reply

It's actually pretty accurate for New Jersey in the 80s.

reply

Yes they do. I see it all the time. They get superficial "hot chicks" looking for gullible and desperate guys to take care of them while they do whatever they want to do with whomever. Some spend their lives going from one to the next, ditch them, change their phone numbers in the process. Maybe that is more common in some places than others.

reply

Yes indeed, it is not uncommon to see hot chicks with ugly dudes that have money and are well connected. I'm only 3 episodes in, but case in point is the horrifically ugly guy that gets out his car with the hot model girl and later asks the kid at the club to sell drugs for him. In NYC at least I see pairings like that fairly often - it's one of those situations where you look and think.. he's gotta be rich or have crazy connections to be with that hottie! Or it's a Seeking Arrangements situation.

I still am not buying the dorky tennis kid with that hot blonde girlfriend. That does seem unrealistic - especially in the 80s when girls like that generally went for the popular jocks. Today nerdy boys seem to do better with cute girls, but back then it wasn't happening.

reply

First of all, Craig Roberts is ADORABLE and David's character is a tennis pro, which is cool. Pretty girls like cute guys! Secondly, Wheeler is funny and fun to be around, and Misty has already had the good-looking, douchy boyfriend. It is not unusual for a girl to want to be around someone who adores her. With regard to the parents, sometimes couples age differently. One partner can get better looking with age and the other, not so much. David is a lot cuter than Barry, played by Josh Meyers. I think the casting works okay.

I think that shallow women really like to be around men who are either rich or very good-looking, or both.

reply

I'd be interested to know if you're a male or female (and if you'd care to share orientation, that'd be relevant). As a female who's interested in males and females, I have to say I find both the characters of David and Wheeler quite attractive, in their particular ways; both pretty nice to look at (Wheeler's eyes are lovely), and both interesting, thoughtful, kind people, who'd be rewarding to spend time with, compared to many guys. Especially towards the beginning of the series, they're both a little at sea as to what to make of their futures, but they're at an age where that's pretty par for the course.
