Christopher Walken missed it by a mile

Underplaying Captain Hook was one of worst acting choices I've ever come across. Hook is all about flash, color, spectacle, melodrama, brashness, over the top, in your face, strutting like a peacock. Walken completely missed it. The severe underplaying of the role came across as dull, lifeless, unfocused, and more than a bit tedious. Oh, what this could have been with a spectacular Hook.

All so true. Hook is best played over the top. That was in no way done that way here. Whoever was the goof that suggested Christopher Walken for Hook should so be fired. He was to old for the role, he could'nt even play the father. And his deadpan style of acting was so wrong for this. Ray Charles could've seen that!

I love chris walken but a younger actor should have been chosen to play the part,

I thought Tim Curry should have been Hook. He could be fun and over the top.

Christopher Walken was miscast. He's too understated for the role.

reply

Agree completely but I didn't see it coming. I thought Walken would bring Shakespearean ham and bombast to the role and he didn't. How about Kenneth Branagh? Alec Baldwin, Kevin Kline? I think Hugh Laurie would have been great.

reply

I wouldn't say that whoever suggested him should be fired. There are so many things about him that ought to have worked. It's such a shame they didn't.

reply

Yeah, he definitely phoned it in.

Christopher Walken didn't "underplay" anything. He just sucked in the role, period, and lacked the energy or the confidence to play the character. It drives me crazy to hear people think that his performance was a conscious decision. It wasn't. Walken was never cut out to play this character or even do an actual broadway show, regardless of how many press releases keep gushing that he was some brilliant musical actor back in the day.

He "sucked in the role" because of his conscious decision to play the role the way he did, and because the director allowed him to make that ridiculous decision. All acting is a conscious decision on the part of the actor. There was absolutely nothing stopping Christopher Walken from playing a brach, vibrant, larger than life Hook but his own decision not to.

reply

It could have been worse, they could have had Russell Brand.
