Turkish version of The Virgin Suicides

I liked this movie - great acting, cinematography and soundtrack.
But I couldn't help but see the many similarities with Sofia Coppola's movie. I recon it's more than a homage.

I thought this one was WAY better than The Virgin Suicides.

I agree. The stakes are way higher in Mustang and in comparison to The Virgin Suicides, the film's pretty much presenting girls that are part of an over privileged society. Essentially, all they have to do is ride it out until they're of an autonomous age. Of course, that's not to say that the things they feel in The Virgin Suicides aren't genuine and worthy of examination and discussion. They are. The stakes are simply higher in Mustang. I wouldn't want to be part of that world.

It is indeed the obvious comparison. I just submitted my review of it and called it "The heartbreaking Turkish equivalent of The Virgin Suicides", and then saw this message thread, ha!

It's been years that I've seen the Virgin Suicides, but I seem to recall that the ending of that is much different than in Mustang.

Anyway, the obvious comparison takes nothing away from the beauty of this film. Glad to see it was rewarded with an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Movie.

I just saw it and was reminded of Virgin Suicides the moment we saw the sisters lounging together in one room.

While VS may have been an influence or reference point, I feel like this film was more heartwrenching.

i spotted this too. in fact, after 2 minutes I was thinking 'bout Virgin Suicides, and then every single scene after that only seemed to prove the comparison. Almost like a remake. A little bit too much. Not a bad flick though. :)

That's actually what came to mind when I watched this movie, but I thought it was all done better here.

At least there was no mass suicide.
