I feel bad for Samberg. The movie was a $10.5 million loss for Universal

The budget for this film was $20 million and it only made $9,496,130. So Universal had to eat a 10.5 million loss. The movie tanked so bad it was out for only three weeks! I read somewhere that Universal wanted to pull the movie out of theaters just under two weeks after its release.

I can just imagine the dialogue in the boardrooms or when them damn suits at Universal met up with the actor(s), producers and directors of the film.

They probably kissed Andy Samberg and directors Akiva Schaeffer and Jorma Taccone's ass in person. But behind their backs them suits probably said, "This movie's gonna be a turd at the box office and we're gonna have to find some movies in our catalog to make up for this s*** stain."

Good thing Samberg has a good vibe about him, and that Brooklyn 9-9 is a hit, plus his collecting them checks from doing so much voice work.

You guys gotta realize. When an actor co-produces, writes, and stars in a film as Samberg did with Popstar, it takes a lot out of them mentally and physically. Publicly Samberg played it cool about this film being a big ass flop, but privately you know this film probably *beep* him up.

Some of y'all probably saying that this movie was a filler/who cares vanity project for Andy Samberg and so why are you (me) reading so much into the film? Well, I'll just say that I've followed his career for a while and something inside of me said to write this. That's all I'm trying to say.

I was one of the few in the theatres when it was there and I and the the 6 other people in there were laughing throughout the whole movie. It stinks that it did so poorly at the box office, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

It was a very funny movie with mostly positive reviews. It didn't catch on with audiences which is a shame, but the studio never got behind it enough. Most of my friends had no idea it existed, watched it and loved it.

Thanks for your terrible overanalysis of Samberg's mental state though. Jealous much? Geesh.

Internet tough guy is all mad. haha

Please give me more analysis on Samberg's mental state. You are oozing with jealousy and it's hilarious.

Meh, they'll more than make their money. Box office is only a tiny portion of overall revenue, particularly for a movie like this that will more than likely hit cult status pretty quickly.

A movie is an investment, not a windfall. (Franchises that are instant profit like Star Wars/Marvel/etc. are the tiniest minority.)

It hasn't been released in many countries like Australia...some of the countries it's like 25th August.

It may have tanked in USA but it's really good funny movie and universal will make money back from overseas. There are many movies that had poor sales in US box office but overall made more money overseas.

maybe people just think that this is one of those crude-humour-ferrel stuff. With the not so popular Samberg, that's why Ferrel bring in Wahlberg and Kevin Hart because he knows that he alone is not enough to attract audiences. Samberg also bring a lot of star in this, but just for cameo. Yeah, Samberg and his pal is quite popular on the internet, but I think they just suit for teen/young adult, the y-gen. & he also make this r-rated (a lot of 17 age y/o people use internet for fun). But, I think this movie can make up its lost with dvd/bluray sales. Don't worry, I love this movie, its fun.

THRILLER IS MY FOOD!

It was probably more than that unless you think marketing is free and that theaters play the movie for free.

No, we don't "know" that. You think you know that, but without actually talking to Andy about it you really have no clue what's going on inside the head of a complete stranger. If your knowledge of psychology is as poor as your knowledge of how film budgets work...then I'd say the exact opposite of whatever you think is most likely correct.

I remember seeing the preview for this in front of the Key and Peele movie and thought it looked great. Never saw anything else about it. At all. As in, I just saw it on a list of box office summer bombs and that's the second thing I've ever seen about it.

I'll check out the dvd.
