Where does the food go?

When I watch these shows and the judging occurs, the judges usually take a couple of bites of the dish before making their decision. My question is what happens to the leftovers? Do they donate it to the needy? Serve the crew members and people in the control room? Do the judges finish it off camera? Freeze or refrigerate it? Do the contetants get to eat what they prepared? It would be really disappointing, but not surprising if they just throw it out. When it comes to food, us Americans can be a wasteful lot.
