Choices

I understand that the film was based upon an actual character. However, I think her choice to rob the bank was inappropriate. Something could have gone very wrong, such as a cop showing up at the wrong time. Also, she will be looking over her shoulder until she is ultimately caught. While the real life character only received probation, the bank robbery would have resulted in a lengthy prison time in most societies plus the loss of her teaching credentials. Prostituting herself to the pawn shop owner would have been a better, yet repulsive, choice. The third option would have been to let the bank take the house. The family could have moved into the inoperable van for a while. Hopefully, her husband would get a job and eventually found some type of housing.

Prostitutes get arrested all the time. Either way she risked jail and humiliation. I guess you have to be a woman to understand why blowing that thug and his friends seems worse than robbery.

If she was willing to humiliate herself by servicing the Pawn Shop guy, why wouldn't she humiliate herself by apologizing to her father's girlfriend the third time. I would have thrown myself at their mercy, taken the money, then tell them off! Nothing else she did makes sense.
