The House ...

... surely too "well appointed", given the protagonist's job and income?

It annoyed me and detracted from the plot, esp. since he took the path he did for more money?

Most stuff in their house are clearly from IKEA and supermarkets (Tesco, Sainsbury, etc). The house itself is a typical new build from the 1980s/1990s. If they married 18 years ago, it's likely the house wasn't that expensive when they bought it. Something like 58 grand.

Take it this way, cash in hand, show low income and a nice working tax credit top up!
