Tough crowd. Only 4.9?!?

This movie is much better than a 4.9. There are many, MANY horror movies that deserve a rating below 5 but this is not one of them. It kept me awake and I thought it was pretty good. Above average, as far as horror movies go, as far as I'm concerned. I gave it a "6" but it could be a "6.5." I admit I grade horror movies on the curve because there as so many that are less than worthless.

Agreed. This was amazingly well done and would've deserved more recognition if it wasn't for the disappointing ending.

yes agree to that it was a good ghost movie until the end....

Good film, that ending tho, it wasn't explained why the dead man was trying to kill them or why the dead girl was stopping him.

@AnonymousCritic:It actually was explained about why the"Dead Man",was acting so scary throughout the movie towards the 3 investigators.Towards the ending when they're talking to the Police Officers,&once they find that the corpse of the"Dead Girl"is gone. The Investigator/"Sensitive",Holly,figured it out that the Dead Man wasn't trying to kill them,he was trying to protect them from the negative&strong force of the Dead Girl. But,I'm not sure if the Dead Girls' strength was so strong,&the reasoning for why he could only make it to the doorway.
Otherwise,I'm glad I'm not alone!I Definitely AGREE w/everyone's messages in saying this is a good 1,it does deserve better ratings than 4 Stars!I know that the ending seemed to do just that, end. But it was altogether a good movie(impressively on a limited,&low"Film Budget")from the beginning that held throughout the whole film!IMO,I think that there's been SO Many movies on IMDb site listed, yet manage to get high Undeserved ratings!
Yeah, this movie is a B- type,it wasn't a movie I'd heard of before, although the summary seemed like it'd be worth watching(like many B- flicks done that I've come across, were also ones I'd never heard of,to be honest).I'm glad I did watch this,it was really good&glad I watched it!!IMHO,I don't choose flicks ta watch thankfully based on their ratings or just a trailer, otherwise I'd miss out on some really great films like this.:)

Oh, thanks, I must have got it the wrong way around, might watch it again...

You're welcome!Actually, just before I left my Message Board response,I'd just watched the movie. So I hope I remembered pretty much right, let alone interpreted that part in the general way they were going for & gave you also some right info w/the movies story line!!

The problem with the ending is what you write was the ONLY explanation. The filmmaker didn't explain who the man or the girl were. Or why did the body disappear? I'm not saying a movie has to tie a denouement in a nice little bow but a ribbon the audience can use to create their own bow would've been helpful. It creates atmosphere but it's no The Babadook - as others have said.

Yes thats what i thought - still good movie up until the end so who was the girl in the basement and why had her husband / brother etc locked her up? Explanation would have been nice!

Its uncle Frank Kirsty!
Its time to play!

Agreed. Enjoyed this movie as well and definitely deserves a higher rating.

This movie was fairly dull, a little bit of build up but unsatisfying and intensely unoriginal with a pointlessly cliched ending lacking any imagination. I'd say a 5 is about right.

This movie was amazing not for it's pace but for it's ability to innervate your imagination. It's what made The Babadook so damn good! It's great to only get very small glimpses of something, and then to build the terror in your own mind. In my opinion, that's what makes good horror..well, good. It makes you think about what scares you most.

I liked that we never saw the black mist or the whole form of the tall man. I thought the scene when they discover the actual Dead Room was very potent.

I also really liked the pseudo-science involved. The sci-fi theory of using low frequency sound waves and that whole tangent was really kind of fascinating.

This movie has a lot going for it. It's definitely more cerebral than visual. It requires a certain type of mind to appreciate it--a mind that is still in touch with its imagination.

I think most of the sub 5 star reviews come from the fact that the modern Horror genre could be more aptly named Gorror. It's all tortureporn and bloodlust. Blood, guts, tits and people making asinine decisions. So when movies that try to succeed in presenting their message without pandering or oversimplification like The Babadook or Dead Room come around, they tend to get a lot of negative flak.

I too found it a very interesting film. They played with the science, and focused more on narrative rather than a screaming, growling ghost meant to smash and destroy things, and unlike most films, where you see the ghost within 10 minutes, this one kept itself hidden, and in the end, even delved into it's motives.

It all clicked and made sense, and the ending didn't actually feel all that cheap. It existed on a meta level, somewhere like Cabin in the Woods, but with less thrills and chills, more atmosphere.

Agree! This was a well shot, narrated and played out script. The scene setting, camera work, slow build up and a no nonsense, real life-like portrayal of all the characters made this as unique as say, Babadook.
There was no pretence of the story being anything but supernatural, unlike the new wave of psychological plots blurring into the supernatural. My 7 is too, because this movie has undeservingly garnered such a low rating!

I enjoyed it. I give it a 6. It was a little better than average and it did well with what they had to work with.
