Why would Gabe think pretending his mistress was his daughter was a good plan?

Why come up with this whole elaborate scheme? Was he planning on lying to everyone, including his Son forever- the whole time hiding "incest"? They could have come up with some other reason to get her in the home.

The guy was a total dope. My question is how was he planning to live after getting rid of his wife? He was a total free loader. Was he going to live off his teenage girlfriends minimum wage paycheck at the record store? Worst plan ever

reply

The husband is clearly a moron.

He thinks that he will have the house after he drives his wife crazy. However, without a stable income, he can NEVER keep the house.

He's a scumbag.

Unless there was an insurance policy on her life and he was planning to kill her, but if so, the movie didn't explore that. I can't understand why he was jeopardizing her job when that was his lifeline. Didn't make much sense. This seemed to be an area lacking in the movie.

I assume Gabe's plan was to make Liz relapse, sent to a mental institution and seek a divorce. Gabe would gain a substantial financial payout from the divorce, thus starting a new life with Caitlin.

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.

reply

Yeah he was a freeloader and a real scumbag, he lived off his wife and she stood by him and truly loved him and the loser cheats on her with a skank. 

Just tried watching it again (with my kids' sleepover going on). Wasn't he working on an album -- maybe the plan was that she would be committed and his new album would bring in money. Still, sleeping with his girlfriend and continuing to keep it secret from his son is downright perverse. Loved the ending where he got his butt kicked, his family turned on him and his girlfriend left. The look on his face realizing he just lost it all was priceless. What made me so angry was right after being caught in bed, he tries to convince Liz that she needs help, accuses her of "judging" him and tries to otherwise blame it all on her. Reminds me of my ex!

reply

I loved the scene when his wife smashed his guitar, lol that was priceless! 

reply

He cared more about that darn guitar than he did his family.

reply

Yeah that is why it was funny that she smashed the guitar. 

Jimi Hendrix lives!!!!

It's likely that after he got his wife committed, they would have conveniently received another letter from the hospital stating that the previous lab results were incorrect. And since we're no longer related, we've realized we're actually very attracted to each other. And what we have is rare, yo.

And I doubt trying another tactic would have made Liz seem crazier than pretending Kaitlin was Gabe's daughter.

reply

when she was hospitalized before, did she still get her usual income? the guy is a scumbag, but he cannot be that stupid!

reply

She probably got disability, which I think usually equals your normal income. Since Gabe didn't know about the second mortgage, I'm thinking he didn't know much about their finances and probably figured the house was paid for. Then his album would hit it big and they'd be rolling in the dough.

reply

Even if they had pulled it off and managed to stay together in that situation for, say, a few years, couples have spats, issues come up, how would they act when they were mad at each other or temporarily broke up. Not a well thought out plan.

reply

It was just a terrible plot with bad acting from the start. The son reminded of Luke from Modern Family before he hit puberty. "I want mommy to get better, lets put her ass in a mental institute".

reply

Does Dylan Neal always play a scum bag in his movies? Lol it's always a twist too...like he's good at first, then you find out he's not lol

reply

The husband was a freeloader and loser. Even if this plot went well, did he really think his son would accept as his stepmother a girl he believed to be his sister? And since his wife was the breadwinner, causing her to lose her job was especially stupid. I loved her breaking the guitar also since she purchased it, its really hers.

The plot was dumb overall.

I think you should have rephrased your question. If your question gives away the premise of the movie then you are essentially "spoiling" the movie for those that have not scene it yet.

To answer your question it was because he was broke and so was his mistress. The wife said they were behind on their mortgage and electric bill. The wife also said she was the only one bringing home income. The mistress had just got a low paying job at a record store 3 months prior to her arrival at their home so in order for him to keep having a place to screw her he had to move the mistress in or let her go.

why would people come on here clicking links to read what other people have to say about the movie and talk about the movie IF THEY HAVENT SEEN THE MOVIE? that concept always baffles me when people get all PO'd that people dont't put "spoilers" on the subject line. What do people expect when they come onto a message board?

I can imagine someone who hasnt seen the movie to come on here and ask their own questions about the movie and then keep referring to their own post to get their "safe from spoiler" thread on. everyones supposed to tippy toe from talking about the movie .... to which they go to a message board to unload.

reply

So... you would expect all the message boards for a film that hasn't been released yet to be completely barren and empty until it IS released?

What do people EXPECT when they come to a message board??? What they DON'T expect is to see the entire game given a way in a single sentence on a board subject heading. You don't go to the Fight Club boards and see right there at the top 're: Jack's crazy and him and Tyler are the same person'.

If people want to talk about something they haven't seen, they should be allowed to. And they should be able to do so without other people ruining it for them.

Typing *SPOILER* in a subject heading takes 5 seconds if you are an extremely slow typist. So why not just do it?

Because common courtesy isn't very common, that's why.

You should have indicated SPOILER ALERT and not divulge an important plot point in the headline of your posting. Thanks for ruining this film for me.

As stated in the post above yours, why would you read a board about a movie you haven't seen? What exactly did you expect? Ponderous.

Near the end, Gabe tells his (soon to be ex) wife that there was no master plan. So, literally, he had no plan. The whole, "hey, let's pretend you're my daughter after my wife gets back" was devoid of any end game.

Not only was the character a world class schmuck, but he was a dumb as a post. Then again, the mistress was willing to go along with the 'mastermind' here, so the question is begged, who's dumber? The dumb person, or the person willing to follow the dumb person?
