Dear Filmmakers

Your film may be good. It might stink. I'll never know, because when you get a bunch of your friends/family (or hire people) to write reviews, I assume you don't believe in your film and don't think it can get good reviews on its own.

If you have no faith in your film, why should I bother watching it?

This trend of fake reviews needs to stop. The only way it's going to happen is if we all boycott films made by people who practice it.

Hi Kay_Rock,

Thanks for taking the time to leave your comments. Just so you know, our film's budget was very small. It was a passion project for all of us involved who are trying to make a living in film. The last thing we would do would pay for reviews. Frankly, we can't afford that. The positive reviews you see are by people who have actually seen the film. Some are people we know who have been fans of the project since seeing it at the premiere, festivals, or the regional tour. However, some are complete strangers that we don't know and have just seen the film since being released on VOD.

As you probably know, IMDB is full of haters, so yes, we encourage people that really liked the film to leave ratings and reviews. The people that go out of their way to make comments and leave reviews are often those who claim the film is the "worst thing they've ever seen". That is a little dramatic don't you think? The film isn't for everyone. Some people like it, some don't. I'd be curious to see if you liked it based on your own viewing and not the good or bad reviews.

Sincerely,

Michael Williams

IMDB is full of haters, because they're reacting to all the fakers!

I spend equal time spending my contempt on "the worst film ever" crowd. Some of those reviews, in fact, end up being a catalyst for me to see a film, because anyone stupid enough to resort to mindless hyperbole probably has taste diametrically opposed to mine. However, the recent rise in the abuse of the IMDb rating system cannot go without comment, and is tainting the efforts of all serious filmmakers. I'd rather see a review that relates someone's love for a film while honestly outlining some of the flaws. Excessive superlatives have a way of invalidating themselves. I'm glad your film has so many fans, but since none of them can objectively review the film without resorting to sycophantism, it may not be my kind of film. I'll wait to see it until my eyes stop rolling into the back of my head so I can view it objectively. I promise at that point to leave an honest review.

I recently saw "The Wackness" and realized how fed up I am with people praising indie films that have no real substance.

Well there's the pot calling the kettle black ! If you don't like people calling your movie a piece of crap, then make something worth watching, Mr. Williams.

Sincerely,

Mr. You Got Served
