Don't make the mistake of thinking that mercenaries are military genii. Mercenaries often full of themselves, but when it comes to battle they often fail spectacularly. It seems to be a common character trait.
Take a look at what happened to the Blackwater crew in Fallujah. Or the 2004 attempted coup in New Guinea. They are chancers and are generally no match for a trained, committed and well commanded force.
Mercenaries don't care about anything except money, and in this case they didn't care about the lives of the black troops they sent in human wave attacks.

And calling a lone Fouga Magister "air support" is stretching things a lot. It was a training jet.
