Very intelligent. That may be the problem. A lot of people aren't intelligent at all and can't understand or appreciate this movie.
For every animal bought, a shelter animal dies.
Great war film, really well made and highlights an unusual forgotten (or ignored) piece of history but people are confusing it with a documentary and picking at obvious inaccuracies.
shareagreed. solid performances and an amazing story of bravery. not enough CGI for the haters i think, and totally missing a Habeus Corpus ending.
turns out the hairy one's a dude. metal one too. all dudes...
Agreed, it was a fine movie.
I think there were a few standout moments. The moment of surrender, where Quinlan remarks that it is a good thing he is making the decision, is handled really well. It was a reversal of the usual narrative. The moment of surrender was actually a triumph (but only in retrospect). The captain who had read all the glorious accounts of famous generals and victories, realizes that the correct military choice is surrender.
I also thought that the guy who played Roger Faulques (the mercenary captain) was superb. He only had a handful of scenes, but he managed to portray a character with some depth, where we would usually see just a cartoon villain.
But there were some glaring howlers. Quinlan getting shot in the shoulder is a stupid movie cliche (it never happened, a bullet in the shoulder is likely to kill). Shooting a submachine gun from the hip - plainly ridiculous.
I also think the scene where Quinlan punched his superior officer was also stupid. I don't think it was necessary to invent the shooting the Belgian mine chief either (man in white suit).
I can see why people find the story unbelievable, but can you see that the trolling and belittling on this board exactly mirrors the reaction that A company got when they came home. Noone believed they had faced overwhelming odds, because none of them died. All that was remembered is that they surrendered. The standard Irish narrative is one of self-sacrifice, e.g. Easter 1916. Jadotville didn't fit this narrative.
AMEN! This is a GREAT film imho! It's rated 7.2 on IMDb, but I give it a 9!
