Submachine Guns Are Useless

Do you notice that some of the soldiers carry French-style submachine guns, and they hit no one! They must be the most useless weapons in combat on open plains like Jadotville. The enemy soldiers never come close enough within the ranges of submachine guns. The bold-action rifles seem most useful, although one soldier hit the enemy businessman using one bullet on a mini machine gun. The most useful gun must be the assault rifles, which the leading character was featured with.

The Irish carry Swedish M/45 SMG, not French.
They use 9mm cartridge, used properly, like a soldier would, they probably would be somewhat effective at the ranges shown, however used as they are shown in the movie, they would have been lucky to hit the field.
Speaking of that, using FN MAG at auto, as also is show, you would hit even less...
Not actually quite sure if the Irish in 61 had assault rifles or they used self-loading rifles ?

The scene where the marksman takes a shot with the Bren gun over open sights as opposed to the scope equipped Lee-Enfield has intrigued me. What was the purpose of doing that?
Had it been a matter of necessity i.e. a malfunction of his rifle, then maybe but that was not the case. It wasn't a heat of the moment thing either, using what he had to hand at the time, it was a deliberate action to do so. A bit baffling, but bearing in mind it's a film you have to let it go.

I wonder what the film’s technical advisor had to say about that odd scene. Are we supposed to believe he requested the Bren because of the stability of its bi-pod? Lol
