Big Hollywood actresses in a TV Series?

Isn't that interesting?

reply

I think that's what makes the show good enough to watch

reply

Just recently, HBO's series Westworld had both Anthony Hopkins and Ed Harris in the cast.

reply

This is definitely not a new trend.

reply

Probably because there are some more interesting TV parts around than decent film roles nowadays.

Supposedly the novel was pursued by both Kidman and Witherspoon as a possible feature film project, but somewhere along the line wiser heads prevailed and the decision was made to adapt it as a limited series instead. I think the roughly 6+ hour running time gave the story room to breathe, and it was much more satisfying than if it had been crammed into a 2 hour format.

reply

They roped them in by telling them it would be a mini series and they were not committing to a long run. It's a smart move. Now they're going to try to get them to agree to another season. Good luck with that.

How is that interesting, exactly? Have you never seen True Detective or American Horror Story or multiple other series with famous actors?

Besides, practically everyone on this show is a well-known actor, and I am not even sure which of the actresses exactly your subject line is referring to because all the three main heroines are quite big in Hollywood.

reply

A lot of bigger actors are flocking to TV because of the lack of original projects for them to work on in film these days. Not everyone wants to do yet another super hero blockbuster flick. Makes a lot more sense to do TV work where you can really focus on creating a well-rounded character.

They're all around 50, when Hollywood roles get scarcer and scarcer for leading ladies. That's why Robin Wright signed on for HOUSE OF CARDS, and why many other actresses are doing cable projects now. Hollywood films aren't really geared for putting dramatic emphasis on actresses now, as a rule. Especially mature ones.

They really aren't "all around 50"...Out of the 5 female leads there are 2 : Nicole Kidman and Laura Dern and technically it's probably Nicole that seems to continue to have the most success in films..
Hollywood is not all that kind to males when they get older either. Out side of a few lucky guys most male leads only get a 10-15 years of leading man status...although older guys are much luckier in continuing decent careers with character roles..More of them.

But tv cable is considered where it's at now anyway with the best writing, interesting characters and creative scripts..As a film buff I noticed a big drop in creativity in films in general in the last 10-15 years...Lots of crap being churned out.
