I wish there were more movies like this

I had never heard of this movie before, and ran across it by accident, looking for something else to watch on Netflix. I read about it here on IMDB, and thought, "What the heck; it's a couple of hours of my time."

Boy, am I glad I took that couple of hours. There was a sense of loss in Hector from the very first few seconds I watched him, and that sense clung to him like a sad, ragged blanket until such time as he spoke the words that gave answer to his wandering. It broke my heart, but it made sense.

The random acts of kindness (and meanness) made this move so real to me. The misunderstandings, the assumptions that turned out to be wrong (or right), the wrong turns, the constant sense of danger...I imagine this is what a lot of homeless people put up with every day, whether they are wandering by choice or by circumstance.

There was a real sense of humanity about this movie and its titular character. I wish there were more like this, not afraid to show humanity in all its diversity and good and bad and in between. People smoke in the real world. They have stories that are painful to think about, that they cannot face. They don't have perfect teeth. Their eyes get red when they cry. They don't smell so good sometimes. But they can surprise you with acts of compassion and kindness so big, they take your breath away. Hector did this for me.

I hope I see more like this, more directors who are willing to be brave like this.

I did notice that all the homeless did have amazing teeth in this film, however, a small flaw for a great film.
