Are the cops seriously allowed to abduct people?

I find it hard to believe the authorities have the well, authority, to abduct a person just because they're suspected of a cyber crime. It's not even a terrorism threat. Can someone enlighten me on the reality or writer's license this may be?

I don't have the answer but I believe all governments are not only capable of it but that it happens on a regular basis. I live in the states so I'm not being paranoid. Maybe someone from Australia has the answer for that country.
