What is actually wrong with Jesse?

I think his character is great but I never actually remember hearing what is wrong with him. I didn't want to jump to conclusions so can anyone who knows about mental illness give me the right answer?

His character is somewhere in the high-functioning autistic-Ausberger spectrum. Although this is dealt with and studied in psychiatry, I am of the opinion that these type of developmental disorders should not be classified as a mental illness. The limitations are imposed by non-typical development of brain connections and we, as yet, do not know what environmental factors are involved. However, children who are on this spectrum are very sensitive to their environments, so there likely is a strong interactions between parenting and genes.

Most of the attention on these developmental disorders is directed toward children and their parents -- leaving adults who struggle with these issues ignored and misunderstood.

In my post doctoral training as a research psychologist and in university teaching I have encountered a few people who are in this range. They often chafe at the dependency situations, and sometimes display the type of wit that Jesse uses to sort out perplexing contradictions. Ned's portrayal of not knowing how much to help, and over helping was spot on.

It is definitely autism. My grandson has this and I believe it is not a disability but a form of evolution.

What an interesting idea! A form of evolution! Must give this some thought. My grandson is also on the high end of the spectrum. He just completed his first year in high school - in fact in one of the top schools in the city that you need to pass an examination in order to qualify even to get in! He is a most unusual child, not always easy to relate to, but very intelligent and a whiz on the computer.

I guessed that Jesse is Aspergers too, and I think they have portrayed him very well. No, it is definitely not a mental illness. We just don't understand enough about it yet.

Never lie to the dog.

There is a link and I'm hoping it will be apparent in my lifetime. Evolution is not a theory I had even considered but as grandparents we live for positive outcomes. Being one generation away from what has happened to our children it is more difficult to comprehend as not always on the scene. Each child with autism shows different traits so I'm not sure when science will catch up with the cause/effect of these magnificent children. This show is difficult to watch but i'm going to keep with it
