some charm, but stupid plot (spoilers)

I enjoyed the acting of most of the leads. As to the plot, there were ridiculous aspects:
1. The very idea that Nick and his friends would feel obligated to fulfill the boy's monumental request to get the boy's parents back together, when dept. store Santas NEVER fulfill ANY of the thousands of requests they get, and children always manage to get over it. And how did he know whether the parents really should get back together? I didn't think so.

2.The burning-down of a business for revenge was inappropriately

thrown into the plot partly for comedy purposes with a tinkly music background and the perpetrator chuckling to himself.

3. They made alcoholism look easy to overcome--in just a few days.

4. The entire con about building the addition was totally insane-and was finally done from scratch in 6 hours to magazine-photo perfection.

Amen!
I did kind of enjoy the movie, but too many head-shakers to make me want to see it again.

I love these cheesy Christmas movies, but this one hit too close to home for me. I wanted to scream at the mom to run, run, run. Her choices are the raging alcoholic or the ex-con with the gambling problem? I just couldn't root for her to end up with either of them. But especially not the soon-to-be-ex-husband.

-- that you don't have much faith in the capacity of people to change for the sake of their families, or in the effectiveness of a program like AA.

Sounds like your biggest problem with the movie is that it wasn't just a "cheesy" (to use your word) throwaway Christmas flick, but rather was a film that, despite having a lot of comedy, managed to take you by surprise with its adult themes.
