Farley was too desperate to please

I think Farley's problem was that he was too desperate to please others: it started in his family where he competed with his siblings to please/entertain their father, then he took it out into the world as an adult. Ultimately he probably felt that if he was making people laugh that they couldn't hurt him, which is kind of sad. If other people are that much of a threat maybe he shouldn't be trying to please them but figure out why they want to hurt him.

Speaking from personal experience, I've found that people who make others laugh are often doing it to achieve some sort of balance or possibly control over their personal lives. People who spend a lot of time making others laugh are commonly quite unsatisfied with their own happiness, and try to compensate. There are certainly comedians with stable minds and emotions (Will Ferral, Chris rock, jerry Seinfeld) but it's almost a majority of comedians that are actually quite unstable emotionally and or mentally.
